Peter really had no problem with the Young Avengers. Sure, he sometimes thought that the teens could be reckless and maybe a little stupid, but he remembered what it was like to me a hero at their age. He knew they wanted to make the right choices, do the right things, but it usually took a few deaths and mistakes to become as seasoned as he was. It also took years of seeing horrible things happen to good people before you got used to it. He had to grow up fast, and now that he looks back on his teenage years, it wasn't really fair.

That's why he took it upon himself to watch over the kids. Peter never wanted Billy, or Teddy, or even Kate to grow up as fast as he had. He wanted them to grow up slow. He never wanted the kids to get used to seeing the bad things that people did. He wanted them to do the things he never really got to do. He wanted them to go to parties, go on dates, do their homework and actually get it in on time.

So he watched over them whenever he could. He never butted in, or took over their fight unless all of them weren't fit for battle. He just clung to the walls and watched, feeling like a silent guardian or an over-protective father. He watched over them and told them what to do because he just wanted them to be safe. He never wanted to have to tell one of their mothers that their child wasn't coming home ever again.

No matter what the kids said, he wasn't being over protective because he thought they could do a good job, it's just that he wanted them to be safe.
