Severus sat at his normal table in the library, glaring at his Arithmancy paper. It took quite a lot for him to admit that he didn't know something, but this was stumping him more than he ever remembered being stumped. "Ugh," he murmured, throwing his quill down moodily.

Remus approached silently from behind, and leaned down to peer over Severus' shoulder. "You're trying to factor gravity out too soon," he murmured.

"No, let's finish the Arithmancy first," Remus said with a light smile, pulling up a chair and settling in next to him. "Here, show me where you're stuck."

Severus poked his quill at a point very near the beginning of the paper. "Somewhere around here."

Remus skimmed over the proof briefly, then stoped and pointed. "Here, I think you really are trying to factor out gravity too early. If you leave that in the equation, and just work it the long way 'round, then you can take it back out in the end, so you can have just x and y to find the curve of time... Or else you've made a mathematical error somewhere, but I can't see that, really..."

Severus frowned, poking the paper again and fixing it. "Bloody hate being wrong," he muttered.

"I don't think you're wrong, just... trying to go about it the easy way when you have to work through that hard bit by hand."

"Ugh." He scratched out a chunk of writing. "And it made it wrong."

Severus sighed, writing out a ridiculously long step. "I'd rather be doing Potions."

"A lot of this stuff is applicable to some more advanced potions, I think," he said softly, resting his chin on Severus' shoulder.

"You can plug in different variables for this equation-- I think this formula would be the one you'd use to figure out how much zinc per gold goes into... oh, what's that one that gives you good luck? I should know that..." he dithered.

Severus held back a small smile. "Felix felicis. We haven't studied that in class yet."
