Flowers and their meanings

Feb 14, 2012 20:22

In Ukraine, similar to the Eastern Slavic countries, flowers are incredibly important.

Traditional associations with flowers are also important.
  • Flowers in even numbers (2, 4, 6, 8,  etc...) are reserved for funerals. Odd number of flowers are for everything else
  • Colors are important: white represents innocence, red is love, while yellow means sadness, betrayal, and separation. Yellow flowers are commonly given at funerals, too.
  • Giving more than 9 flowers is considered only if you have serious romantic feelings for someone (although this rule is broken for birthdays when you're allowed to give a bouquet of flowers the same number of years of the birthday girl. Just remember that it needs to be odd numbered so add or subtract one to make the number odd, if needed. )
  • Roses are considered a "woman's" flower so men are generally given gladiolus.
  • Carnations, originally tied with the Soviets (Bolshevik Revolution), are popular during Victory Day and other Soviet centric celebrations. Red carnations are also the flower of choice for men on anniversaries.
