[Armand is moving in and out of the range of the camera as he's putting various things away in his cabin. When he can be seen, he's wearing loose blue cotton trousers, a thin cotton shirt and a straw hat. His skin is darker, tanned, and a little wind-burned, and his hair shorter but still long enough to tie back though it's down at the moment. He ( Read more... )

Thank you.

How did you do here? I still am not sure how long it has been.

[Voice] Why yes, yes you can. empirical_data August 10 2010, 07:08:38 UTC
It has been ten days, eleven hours, forty-seven minutes, and thirty-three seconds since we last spoke according to my internal chronometer.

Any change has been unremarkable.

That short a time? Oh my.

I've been gone... months. I suppose that means you are well enough then. I'm glad to hear that.

I am functional and have learned songs from several animated films lent to me by Martha Jones.

Was there anything of particular note from your journey you would like to share?

I showed Jack around Paris. He knew some of it better than I did, but it has changed. Entire streets and neighborhoods are gone. I suppose that is what 200 years will do.

The remarkable part is how much stays the same. My father once commented on such things as an explanation of-

[He stops mid-sentence, to reconsider what he's saying. Then seems to change his mind on any number of stories that he could share.]

...Perhaps one day I will visit myself.

You should. If I ever get another chance (which is unlikely) where would you recommend I visit?

And something else I wished to ask, simply because it seems this Star Fleet thing you are a part is a military organization.

My captain once mentioned a cafe that he enjoyed eating at, though I would have to possibly visit a specific time period to encounter it.

It is a defensive organization largely intended to protect their scientific ventures into deep space and facilitate contact with other cultures rather than what was traditional military, but yes, I am an officer.

There are very few establishments that last from century to century. We were able to visit Le Procope, which has been around since before my grandparents' time.

That's a bit of a relief, but one could easily not learn that distinction from Captain Kirk, who used to be here.

Do you know much about... twenty-first century hand... guns?

My experience with them has been limited to the holodeck, though in researching out such roles I have learned a great deal about them.

On what in particular did you wish to enquire?

...

[A long silence while Armand tries to gather his words.]

Captain Harkness seemed to be convinced that I might be in some danger from particular inmates when I returned, so he taught me how to shoot accurately with a handgun. I was not able to purchase one and bring it back with me, so I mean to ask the Admiral for one.

We discussed that I would likely need a fairly small one, a... lower caliber? I know I wish one that I can understand the mechanics of and take care of myself.

The entire concept distresses me, but tis true I don't know how to defend myself well in other ways.

Understandably so. I can understand his reasoning, given the previous situation. [He was almost tempted to act on their behalf even, at least have a word with the gentleman responsible. He second-guessed himself, however, and now the man was gone.]

If it is a specific inmate in particular, he is no longer here. A .22 caliber weapon would cause minimal damage, though I would primarily focus on physical defense techniques. There are at least two competent police officers aboard that I would trust to show you the proper way to use, and not to use, a handgun.

Captain Vidal is gone? Oh good. I was beginning to doubt that anyone could help him

His ideas were... vile.

We practiced with Jack's gun, a .38 caliber, I think. I thought it kicked rather hard, but he assured me there were models that at least didn't weigh as much. Other kinds of revolvers.

Police officers... Sam Tyler and Sgt. Howie?

Someone could, I am certain. Unfortunately that individual did not seem to be present.

Yes. There is also a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police aboard who could likely provide you with any needed alternative tactics.

I'll ask. I need to settle on the type first, and then arrange to keep in practice. I simply don't have the memory... oh wait. I know who I should ask.
