breast ironing?

Jul 07, 2006 11:51

I just read this article on cnn.com about breast ironing in Cameroon, Africa. The mothers of young girls take hot stones and iron their daughters breasts to make them less attractive to men and thus less likely to be sexually harassed and raped.

Only one sentence in the whole article talks about how this effects breastfeeding. It says that for one girl it took a month for her milk to come in and the baby nearly died.

Now this is happening to one in four girls in all of northern and central Africa, how could only one sentence in the whole article talk about breastfeeding. Isnt this how they feed their children?! I wouldnt think that formula was an option in a village where they probably dont have electricity.

It makes me sick to think that these people are so influenced by what seems to be western culture turning breasts into sexual objects that their young daughters are suffering and not being able to feed their children. Not to mention that it is extremely painful and can cause breast cancer.

I read Cnn.com everyday but this makes me want to stop reading them all together. What's important in the world? Seriously.
