Miscarriage is an emotionally challenging ordeal accompanied by all the feelings of bereavement. When it occurs more than once it may, understandably, be a devastating experience. Most experts suggest that investigations to detect the cause of recurring miscarriage should begin after three consecutive pregnancy losses.

An early miscarriage is one that happens in the first few weeks of pregnancy. A late one is one that happens after the first few weeks. A first trimester miscarriage happens before thirteen weeks of pregnancy.

Whereas the old pregnancy tests would become positive with a concentration of 3,000 IU (about two weeks after the missed period) the monoclonal tests show a positive result at between 25 and 50 IU and these levels are reached before a period is missed.

A Walgreens pregnancy test shows positive at 50 IU.

All on site pregnancy tests can give false positive results in the weeks after delivery (as it takes time for the levels of hCG to return to normal after pregnancy, normally 4 weeks) This is also the case after a miscarriage or termination.

In general, hCG declines by half approximately every 2 days. Since levels are maximal at the point in pregnancy you were, it is entirely possible that there is residual hCG.
