Martin Luther King Jr. was born in Atlanta Georgia on January 15th, 1929. He was son to Rev. Martin Luther King Sr. and Alberta Williams King. King graduated from Morehouse college in 1948 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology. He was mentored by a civil rights leader by the name of President Benjamin Mays during his stay at Morehouse. He became the pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Mongomery, Alabama in 1953. King helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) in 1957. In 1959 he graduated from Crozer Theological Seminary in Chester, Pennysylvania with a Bachelor of Divinity degree. He recieved a Ph.D. in Systematic theology from Boston University. He married his wife Coretta Scott on June 18, 1953. The wedding was held at her parents house in Marion, Alabama. Martin Luther King Sr. preformed the wedding ceremony. Coretta and Martin had 4 children together whom later became civil rights activists. King became the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize on Octover 14th, 1964. On April 4th, 1968 Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated at the Loraine Motel, in Memphis Tenessee. The accused assassin was a white supremesist and segregationist by the name of James Earl Ray.
King was murdered at 6:01 pm while preparing to lead a march for sanitation workers in the area. Shots were heard from inside of the hotel room by Kings friends. He was prenounced dead at 7:05 p.m. at St. Joseph's Hospital. The assassination lead to national hysteria that caused riots in more than 60 cities. President Lyndon B. Johnson declared a national day of mourning for Martin Luther King Jr. More than 300,000 people attended his funeral. James Earl Ray was caught trying to use a false Canadian passport in an Airport in the UK. The passport was in the name of Ramon George Sneyd. The movie Who Killed Martin Luther King stated that James Earl Ray claimed to be hired by a man named Raoul to assassinated the civil rights leader, but no evidence of such person exists. Ray was extradited to Tennessee and charged with the murder of King. He confessed to the assassination on March 10, 1969. Three days later he took back his confession of killing King, but he was still sentenced to a 99-year prison term.
There were many conflicting theories about the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. But I believe the gonvernment was conspiring to kill Dr. King. It seems to my that James Earl Ray was either framed or assassinated to kill King. The movie stated that J. Edgar Hoover, of the FBI, used his power to work against those he didn't like and that secret FBI documents were later found talking about "removing" King from the public scene. J. Edgar Hoover believed that King was a waste of Federal Money and conspiring with the communist party. King was very controversial, and the government still supported segregation in his time, which is why I think they had him killed. He was quickly gaining power and recognition in the public eye and the government didn't want any sudden radical changes.
Nonviolence is the answer to the crucial political and moral questions of our time; the need for mankind to overcome oppression and violence without resorting to oppression and violence. Mankind must evolve for all human conflict a method which rejects revenge, aggression, and retaliation. The foundation of such a method is love.
