Couch Prompt: Events.

Talk about the one event in your life that has affected you the most.

Everybody always asks about that. [sigh].

When I was five years old my dad died. He was a safety and human resources technician at the Gotham World Chemical Plant. He was climbing a ladder to one of the catwalks circling those big tanks and fell. He fell five stories to his death.

The thing was...[snorts] It was career day.

Oh yeah, I hear you laughing. Mom said that since I spent the day with her he should be the one to take me....she really regrets that I think. To this day. I keep telling her that it's not her fault...

Because it's not. The rungs had been poorly maintained. Dad's death was an accident that could have been prevented if management had been willing to pay for upgraded materials. But they were cutting costs.

I could commend them. I really could. Instead of cutting personnel which would have directed attention to the fact that they were syphoning money into their own bank accounts they decided to cut costs in other areas. Faulty products and faulty equipment versus cutting their own Salaries. You know, I could commend them? If it wasn't their responsibility to the consumer and to their staff ahead of their own corporate agenda!

Wayne Enterprises bought out the Chemical Plant awhile back-updated everything. What did we get? a settlement. a measly 30,000 dollars. My dad's Salary as opposed to him seeing me graduate from law school-maybe one day seeing me get married-getting to know my children and for what? Because some dumb fucks decided that they were willing to do whatever it took to get rich and were willing to do whatever had to be done to keep themselves safe and secure.

We got a lawyer. A nice guy named Jim Charvet-went to Harvard. He drove a nice car and made a nice little speech and got us 30,000 dollars-a third of which he took to pay his legal fees. I knew that I wanted to be a lawyer when Jim said that there was a way to make people pay without violence-without causing people pain. It made you the better man. I knew that I wanted to be a prosecutor when I watched him drive away with half of my mom's pain and suffering settlement.

I don't do screwing over other people. Hurting other people. There's...enough of that in the world.
