Racism in football is a real problem. Recent events show that it won’t just fade away. Its time the voice of the silent majority was heard. Its time the racist knew there’s no longer a place for them in football. Stand up. Speak up.
In December, Arsenal striker, Thierry Henry, was awarded runner-up at the World Player of the Year gala. At his acceptance, he modeled a black and white interlocking wristband, similar to the well-known Livestrong. However, this wristband was not worn to solicit money for cancer, instead, the black and white promoted awareness of racism in [European] football.
“Forgive but not forget,” said Henry at the Nike campaign launch for Stand up Speak up. The Spain v. England game at the Bernabeu in Madrid made Henry evident to the progression of racism still present in the sport. (Kickitout Campaign)
Henry teamed with Rio Ferdinand of Manchester United, and with the support of that familiar swoosh, began production on a product that has sold out in stores and websites based throughout Europe. At £1.50 (approximately $3) fans can purchase not one, but two connected bracelets that support the cause. The profit, instead of going towards hospitals and support foundations, is used to conduct extensive research into the problem of racism in football and is distributed to racism organizations across Europe.
