My dog, Winnie, ran away today.
Don’t worry. She’s home safe now.
I was at my sister’s house helping her out in the last few days of her pregnancy when I got a call from a number I didn’t know. I don’t normally answer calls from strangers, but I did this time. On the other line, a woman who didn’t seem to speak too much English told me that she found my dog. My heart stopped and everything for the next 45 min or so was kind of a blur.
I don’t have children. But my dog is my baby.
I thanked her and told her I’d be over as soon as I could, but I was half an hour away.
I drove with my mind only on Winnie. Truthfully, I shouldn’t have been on the road under that kind of emotional intensity.
When I arrived at their house, they weren’t there! They took the poor scared and shaking doggie on a walk. I’m glad they were treating her so well, but I just wanted my puppy back. I went looking for them and when I saw them, I ran. I ran so hard. Under normal circumstances, I would have never run that much. But I wanted to hold my baby. And she was just as happy to see me.
As it turns out, my roommate had let Winnie outside and she escaped the first chance she had out a small hole in the fence. I had always assumed the hole just lead into the neighbors’ backyard. And it does, sort of. But their yard is not enclosed. It is open to the driveway and street.
Thank goodness for those nice people who took her in and called me! It makes me sick to think of her running around alone, in the street. Oh, what could have happened is just painful to imagine.
As I write this, she is curled up next to me, sleeping. She doesn’t even know what I went through in that hour. She doesn’t. But I’m so happy she’s home. I so happy she’s safe. I’m so glad we’re okay.
I credit it to karma. Back when I was living with my sister, I found a dog wandering the streets in the middle of the night. I took it in and found it’s owner the next day. What goes around, comes around. I did good. And good was done for me.
Heaven forbid something like this happens again. Rest assured I have already re-blocked the hole in the fence. This time with much heavier materials and extra big rocks in front as well. ...Just in case.
