so apparently there are talks of a veronica mars movie if they can raise money for it in 30 days? (ETA: LOL, they're going to be able to raise the full amount in a couple of hours-- it's awfully fun to watch the numbers change) which I'm guessing means I should totally watch the show now sometime and I bet it's going to be like the time I watched

WATCH. Veronica is like my favourite main character on TV ever. (normally I don't like them just because they are main character and the center of storylines, but this show has thwarted me in this.)

But also, yeah, it's one of those strange things where I'm absolutely used to the main characters getting a lot of hate (mostly because of their protagonist privilege, I guess) but everyone seems to love Veronica? That is kind of epic to me.

I've been meaning to ask you: do you ship her with anybody?

Oh and I think the reaction to main characters also depends on whether the writing suffers as an extension of the main character's (whether it's actually good or not..well). It's just super easy to get resentful when that's the case.
(I pretty much like all of these to various degrees and so do most people I know)

Hahaha, the ETA is certainly good to know :D although I'm looking forward to shipping something because I am severely deprived of fandom that produces quality fic. Or, you know, fic at all.

I think it definitely must be fandom corners because I've seen an insane amount of Buffy-love, but also I've seen active dislike as well-- mostly related to who she likes etc-- which, ugh. (But I think BtVS is one of those shows that developed ALL its characters so much that it's hard to dislike the protagonist. I think the hate is often a result of the circumstance where people like the supporting characters and they don't get screen-time at the expense of the protagonist. Then it just annoys everyone, and they project that onto the lead a lot of times. I think that'd be a pretty darn impossible claim for anything Joss-verse.) Also, when it all and only about the protagonist; for instance that may be true of Harry (and I'm sure he gets a lot of hate as well), but not necessarily true of Hermione, because she isn't central in ~that sense. The rest though, I don't know about!

The sheer level of self-awareness in BtVS and AtS is ridiculous of course, it's like EVEN IF YOU WANT TO DISLIKE THEM, HOW CAN YOU WHEN THEY'RE AWARE OF EXACTLY HOW AWFUL THEY CAN BE? It will forever be my favorite thing about both shows; that and the deconstruction of heroism. Joss is really an optimist at heart and it comes through a lot, but he's also realistic to the core so that comes through too. It's an interesting set of contrary dynamics!

(Haha, it's good to know I won't be completely alone, if I somehow end up not being into them :D The fandom seems pretty unanimous in their shipping!)
