and she brought in more wine and flowers and a fun 'birthday' card for him--because she had remembered. Maybe this wasn't a fatality.
Maybe this would work. He would try to talk to her, give back. He could remember that.
"I've ordered a cake. What do you want to do today?" she chirped.
Damon discovered that he did not like her pain. He did not enjoy her act. He wanted to help.
"I want to just be with you," he said, touching the small of her back. She nodded but he felt her tensing under his palm.
"We can do that, anytime," she said. "We should go out."
And he was hasty. "Yeah, you could show me where you were crying last night."
She looked over her shoulder and she lost her smile.
"You know, you can be a smartass any other day of the week."
"That ends with Y, I know. But I just want to help." He paused and tried to make her look at him. "I do." He kept his hand on her back, fearing that she'd run if he let go--so he forced himself to let go, step back. He had learned that much. "Talk to me."
"It could be any reason," she said. "Missing my family, friends, uh, how about my old life. It happens, Damon."
"It does. But not last night. So what is it lately that has you so upset?" He waited and she seemed completely speechless. Now he was in trouble. "You don't have to leave. I won't ask you what it is, but you don't have to leave. I won't bite...at least not while you're crying," he said, to make a joke he didn't feel like making but...
She looked down.
The timing. That was why. He went to step away but she stopped him with a strong hand on his arm.
"It isn't you."
"Yes, it is," he said. He realized what had happened now, the tensing up, why she never took it slow with him-it was like being stabbed and it wasn't the first time that he was blindsided by the cause.
"Okay," she said. "Yes, it is you. But I'm happy here, with you. I don't want to leave, and I don't want you to leave."
"How can that be? Get real, Caroline, if you can't stand it when I touch you, the honeymoon is over," he said. "If I had known--."
"You wouldn't let it stop you," she said, sarcastically. Another joke.
"Well, I don't want to now!" he said. "Believe it or not, I don't want to hurt you."
"That's too bad."
He stared at her in shock, and her grip was a vise. "Listen," she said, sighing. "I know you don't want to hurt me. I honestly know that...it's just that my body hasn't forgotten yet, okay. But I want you, and I want you to stay."
He shook his head and her hand tightened even more.
"Damon. Do you want me? Are you just the tiniest bit happy with me?"
"...Yeah," he admitted. "I might even miss you," he added, rolling his eyes for good measure.
She beamed up at him, warm again and bright. (He wasn't lying about missing her). The she kissed him, firmly and full of affection. "Then we'll make it work out. Now about the cake."
She let go off his arm because she knew he wasn't going anywhere, that he wouldn't just leave her to be alone. He was going to stay even if she had no idea how much it would cost him. Or if she did have an idea.
Like before--and again and again--he would let her.

Guh, my this-could-so-happen ship! And I loved how you included all aspects of their canon relationship; there's the past horror and fear, the present snark and the future possibility, That is freaking amazing! And also just the general inevitability of their sort-of relationship where they just drift towards each other. And also, I adore the fact that this round Damon knows her well enough to know when she's not okay and cares enough to stay. And how they work somehow, even though their history would suggest that they don't.
Like before--and again and again--he would let her.
