Arc stood with his back and palms pressed against the brick building he was using for protection. Sweat dripped down from his eyelashes and settled at the base of the dark red mask covering his face. He itched to check and see if the men were still around the corner waiting for him but forced himself to remain frozen.
“Come out here you cape wearing fairy!” The holler was accompanied by gunfire and chunks of brick crumbling to the ground from the impact of bullets. Arc could feel his heart beating out of his chest. Normally he was the one going after someone, not him being the one chased. Hell, he didn’t even know what he did to these jackasses for them to follow him and shoot at him.
Arc took a deep breath and looked up at the building across the street. He was in the middle of determining if he should take the risk of using that building for protection and a better vantage point when he saw the graceful arcs and leaps of a familiar cape. His heart jack-hammered out of his chest. As much of a help Imp was at times, he didn’t know when he needed to stay away.
“Oh you called in back up did you?” The words were barely comprehendible growls. Arc watched the neat tumble and dive Imp performed to reach ground level. “Well he’s even more of a fairy than you! Calls himself Imp. Let’s see how he likes this!”
A heavy rush of gunfire erupted. Arc could see Imp plaster himself against the building opposite of him. He felt sorry for whoever these idiots were. Imp looked like he was ready to blow. He had never seen Imp act this way before; reckless and full of fury. No one else was offering Arc help because they knew this was too dangerous to get involved in. The police hadn’t even tried to do much besides set up a barricade and back away. But Imp? He jumped right into the middle of everything.
“Call me a fairy one more time,” Imp’s voice rang out, “See where that gets you.”
Holding his breath he watched Imp tear out from his only source of cover and out of his line of vision. The sound of a firing gun, the scuffle of shoes and the silence that fell over the block had Arc tearing out from his only source of protection.
The barrel of the gun was still smoking as Arc ran passed where it had slid across the pavement. All he could see was the crumpled form of a man and Imp struggling against the hold of the second man. He was making a choking, gurgling sound. His gloved hands slipping and clawing at his throat. Then Imp was limp and the weight of his body tugging the man who had his hands wrapped around his throat down with him.
Arc was moving faster than he ever had moved before. He raced passed blue uniforms and slid to a stop. He wasn’t hurt.
Imp was now on top of the man delivery harsh blows and it didn’t look like he was going to be stopping any time soon. Arc could barely make out the threatening words that Imp stood up to loom over the man as he whispered out, “You ever hurt Arc, you won’t be leaving in handcuffs. You’ll be leaving in a body bag.”
Imp looked up and caught Arc’s eye for a moment before he was bounding around the corner, over the police barricade and out of sight. He heard the tell-tale chatter of the crowd and took that as his own cue to leave.
He chased after Imp but the lithe form had disappeared within the crowded sidewalks and the excitement of what had just happened. He shed Arc’s skin as soon as he crawled through the window of his apartment. The cape, the boots, the tight material. He needed it gone. He set the dark red mask on top of the bathroom counter as he turned the shower as hot as it could go.
The water scalded his skin but Puck welcomed it. He welcomed the way his blood pressure rose, his heart beat faster and he sucked in deep breaths through his mouth. He had never been as terrified as he was tonight. It wasn’t because he was the one being chased or shot at. It was because of Imp. It was because Kurt risked everything.
They had always risked everything for each other but tonight was different. Tonight he had seen Kurt gasping for air and falling limp against the pavement. It wasn’t Imp. It was Kurt.
He jumped with the shower door opened and Kurt was there slipping into the steam behind him. He pressed soft kisses along Puck’s shoulders, his hands resting low on Puck’s hips, “I’m so sorry.”
Puck licked his lips and pulled Kurt closer, wrapping Kurt’s arms around his middle and resting his own hands over Kurt’s. They swayed gently under the shower. Kurt’s cheek pressed against the middle of Puck’s back. Puck turned the shower off stood still in the steam that lingered. “Don’t you ever do anything like that again. I can’t ever see you like that.”
“You,” Kurt pressed a kiss to Puck’s spine, “You were being shot at. Not because you interrupted some asshole trying to knock over a bank but because you’re Arc. They weren’t trying to hurt Arc. I couldn’t let that happen. I was only doing what you would have done.”
Puck turned around, his hands cupping Kurt’s cheeks as he pressed his lips to Kurt’s forehead, “I thought I lost you tonight.”
“You’re not that lucky,” Kurt tried to gloss over the fact he was close to passing out. He remembered the pounding in his ears, the black spots covering his vision before he thought of a way out. “I’d do anything for you. I’m not going to let you get shot when I could have done something to stop it.”
Puck let out a sigh as he grabbed a towel to dry them off, “I just, this is the first time I’ve ever really been scared. None of that other stuff scared me. The thought of what was happening to you? I thought I was having a heart attack it hurt so much to see you like that.”
