I can't find a weakerthans song that fits exactly but the lyrics are so literary that you should include a song by them. maybe "our retired explorer" because it's kind of about a historical figure?

another good belle & sebastian song is "get me away from here, I'm dying"
"ooh, I'll settle down with some old story
about a boy who was just like me
thought there was love in everything and everyone
you're so naive
they always reach a sorry ending
they always get it in the end
still it was worth it as I turned the pages solemnly..."

bright eyes (LOLOLOLOL) - "loose leaves"
"there are stories in the soil, loose leaves cover the ground
there are volumes in the forest no one reads aloud"

jason molina - "spectral alphabet" ....kind of?

I feel like there's at least one mirah song that would fit but I can't figure out which one

modest mouse - "bukowski"

sufjan stevens - "saul bellow"

eh none of these are all that great. post the mix when you're done though!

hm, so I have to say that I am really weird about a few male singers.. eg, Conor Oberst. aside from all of the Bright Eyes lolz, I acutally really like the MUSIC but I hatehatehate that dude's voice. it kind of kills me. also kind of the Weakerthans, but I have to admit I am far less exposed to them than Bright Eyes.

I don't know Jason Molina. can you upload for me?

I was kind of thinking Mirah's "Gone Sugaring" because she mentions PA and it's at the Historical Society of PA... but I don't know. it might be too much a stretch.

I totally understand about conor oberst. I looooooved bright eyes my senior year of high school and now I can barely listen to any of the albums. "loose leaves" isn't as obnoxious as most of his other songs though - it actually sounds pretty different to me, and he's not as whiny.

as far as the weakerthans, I can definitely see how people are put off by the guy's voice the lyrics are so ridiculously good.

jason molina is the guy behind songs: ohia and magnolia electric co., he just likes to release things under his different names. I can upload the album that song is on, and I also have a few songs: ohia albums if you want those. (I am sorry if you already know all of this haha)

it's a pretty depressing song but smoke by ben folds five--
Leaf by Leaf page by page
Throw this book away
All the sadness all the rage
Throw this book away
Rip out the binding, tear the glue

etc. etc.
