L O V E I T . L O O K I N G F O R W A R D T O I T!
Yesterday, was the first lecture and Tutorial for ENGL 210 and already i am excited! "Shakespeare and The Renaissance", one of my favourite Literature periods. I'm really looking forward to this semester! Is it only me that got thrown off with the assignments? I was looking through the Unit Outline before i went to class and i was just . . . hmm What is a Commonplace Book? But now that i think about it, i think that it would be enjoyable, different, but enjoyable. I think it is kind of like a portable livejournal where i can carry around and pretty much write down anything anywhere.
Now in regards to the Tutorials and "SHAKESPEARE AND THE RENAISSANCE", in the tuts we read through a couple of poems which were quite interesting!
The poem "There is a Garden in her Face" portrays the complete God-like, angelic image of a woman. The poet describes her face as a "heavenly paradise" just by looking at her face. However, i had a little think and as i was walking around, looking about the heavenly and angelic image of the woman that Thomas Campion described was nowhere to be seen, maybe in magazines or television, the museum on painitng of venus etc. Yet, those were all superficial and maybe even artificial. I think that this poem was more like a vision of true beauty. Shakepeare's Sonnet 130 was more closer to my idea of true beauty. When i first read this poem i thought WOW what a way to compliment the woman you love! but the last two lines of the poem completely changes the whole course of the poem. "And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare", this shows that if women are meant to have red lips and rosy cheeks etc then the love he has for his mistress with eyes "nothing like the sun" and "black wires grow on her head" must be a love so rare. I think this is far more romantic.
This is my reply to Genevieve's Livejournal!

Just like you i am just a sad to leave the holidays behind! I am however really excited to get on to this topic. Maybe it is because i had my first look at shakespeare in Highschool (ended up loving it). I did texts like "Midsummer Nights Dream", "Othello", "Romeo and Juliet" and many more of his works. I actually hate to study "Taming of the Shrew" and "10 Things i Hate about you" as a comparative text to see the original and the contemporary form. It was really interesting! I really hope that this semester will be an educating and interesting year! haha i love the poem she reads in "10 things i Hate about you" and i can see ahow it reminds you of Shakespeare's Sonnet 130.
Hope to read more of your posts in the future!
Christine.
I Hope everyone else will find this semester as a Great learning Experience!
Can't wait to see what comes up ahead!
Bye for now!
