They're more loyal to you that way. They might not listen to a trainer they don't respect, but if they care about you they'll push themselves further for you.

Licking is their way of cleaning themselves. It helps them keep their fur untangled, for instance, and some animals do it to cool themselves. Helping each other with this is a way to show affection.

Their mouths aren't nearly as unhygienic as the human mouth. Plus, they don't have soap.
