Last night I went up to Seattle to see both Joe and Johnny's bands play. It was a good show, although the bar crowds tend to be a little too mellow for my taste. This morning I set out early for a run down the skykomish, and for once I decided to grow a set and run boulder drop. Boulder drop is a powerful class 4 boulder garden, and is kind of a rite of passage for Seattle area kayakers. I've had the skills to run it for a while now, but every time I would psych myself out and end up walking it. Today, although I was still nervous, and questioning my judgement, I committed and ran the entry. I sat in the eddy above the picket fence section for a minute and finally ran the airplane turn and the runout between house rock and little house rock. Given the stigma of the drop from the raft companies, and the reputation it has for delivering some hard core beatings, it feels great to have that first run of it out of the way.
On another note (well, kind of the same one), I mentioned to a friend of a friend at the show last night that "kayaking is life". Thinking about that, and about everything that whitewater boating is, and has taught me, and given me, that statement couldn't be more true.
