Emily's exercise of the day:
Alright... let's say you're teaching a highschool level art class,
and a student comes up to you and asks
"What exactly is art?"
"Am I an artist?"
"Are the projects that I construct in your class actually ArtHow would you answer these questions

i've been awfully busy,
"What exactly is art?"
yes it can be anything. I tend to only call something art if it has an author.. someone who decared it their own art. art can be unintentional, but only if it is then defined as art.. I tend to be very open minded when it comes to this stuff. but, as was mentioned in another comment, not everything is Good art. in fact, most of it isn't.. just like anything else. most of it is half-ass and uninteresting.
"Am I an artist?"
only if you say so. hehe
"Are the projects that I construct in your class actually Art?"
yes. but saying that doesn't mean much.
How would you answer these questions?
How would your answers change if you were in a non-art classroom?
in a non-art classroom, i tend to keep the definitions shorter - no less absurd, but be ready to have your ideas rejected.
How would they change if you were in an elementary classroom?
ah, i've actually shown my art to an elementary classroom, and talked to them about it.. and with them, i like to speak as if i'm speaking to artists... which means not to simplify or dumb down (not that i use big words or anything).
anyway those are the short answers...
