Guh.
The plot was alright-ish. No actually it wasn’t.
It was below standard. The writer just seemed to jump from one drama to another with little thought as to how it can all fit together. Despite that, it was simple and it just worked. Though not exactly my cup of tea, the episode as a whole just felt a little bland. Really, the aspect that drove the episode were the characters and the lovely snippets of humour slotted in here and there which I enjoyed. Though pretty typical of disaster movies, the eclectic group that seemed to form in the episode worked well, I liked how we got a few brief insights into their characters.
Morphine (what a name!) and Foon were adorable. Balaclava… Bananarama… Bavacadalada or is it Battacattalatta? Anyway, the name alone just brought up giggles - but that’s really the only thing I really enjoyed about him, excluding his imaginative appearance. His apparent infatuation for Kylie was so unconvincing. That’s an area where this episode fell in my books, it just didn’t connect with me or convince me in any way. Many moments in the episode just made me roll my eyes and cringe a lot of the time, rather than feel for the characters. Mr. Earthonomics was great humour, I enjoyed Russel T’s light-hearted interpretation of Christmas, definitely one of the few highlights. Adding to that list - the fact that Londonders fled for Christmas, and The Queen’s laugh out loud cameo appearance was fun! As for the rest of the guest characters, I didn’t care for them at all - the grumpy guy, cute captain guy and Astrid were just plain. One thing I didn’t like about the characters as a whole - in the end most of them all boiled down to having a cheesy die-hard bravery characteristic in them, which was just poor writing.
I have to say, I was expecting better things from Kylie. Not exactly sure why, I just was. Astrid was a nice girl, but there was just no depth and I just simply didn’t care. Kylie did a poor job I have to say and the writing of her character overall was just badly executed. It was like they didn’t exactly know who she was, they just wrote down some random response lines whenever she had a scene with Ten (which was most of the time) and hoped for the best. Astrid’s death was obvious. Kylie’s too famous to have a real companion spot in the show and I’m glad for that to be frank. One thing that I just really don’t feel worked was when The Doctor said “You should see me in the mornings,” then Astrid replied with a quick “Ok.” It was an odd line watching the advert for the episode, but I hoped in context it would seem less odd - but no. It was clear what Astrid was trying to get at, but couldn’t she have said “I’d like that,” or something along those lines. Ok, it’s nothing big, it just irritated me. So in the end Astrid decided to attack the appalling baddie of the episode with… a forklift truck. Yeah… Couldn’t Russel T have come up with a more inspired way to do it? Couldn’t Astrid have used Bannakaffalatta’s metal thing to somehow force him back into that firey pit and somehow get dragged down with him? C’mon it’s sci-fi you can pretty much do anything and having Kylie ram the baddie with a forklife truck was the best you could do? Anything else would have been classier. It just looked like a stupid crossover with Robot Wars. Instead of being dramatic, Astrid’s death was just a joke and I actually laughed. That’s clearly not what Russel T was intending. Poor effort.
This thing about Ten having to have some kiss in the first episode with any vaguely attractive companion… no no no. It was just not needed. It felt so forced and pointless. I didn’t see any bond whatsoever between the two - Russel T. please stop this incessantly stupid tradition. My eyes were seriously raised as to Ten’s reasoning behind not accepting Mr. Earthonomics request to go with him - is it because he’s not a pretty girl? Ten, you’re such a perv :p.
The worst Christmas episode by a long shot I have to say and completely below par when compared to regular episodes. I was disappointed, expecting something of a much higher standard, the Christmas specials are usually of a reasonably good standard. It’s really the poor plot and Astrid that let it down, making the episode bland, as well as all the horribly cringe-worthy moments like that Disney-rip off sparkling thing at the end. Couldn’t we have gone without that? I was not impressed.
The rest of season 4 looks great however, I’m quite pleased Catherine Tate is returning, I enjoyed Catherine Tate in last year’s Christmas special and she’d make a good companion. I’ve also heard Billie Piper is going to be in the next series. I doubt for long, but still any chance of seeing Rose again is something I can’t miss! Though, I hope it doesn’t completely nullify the events of the S2 finale.
Torchwood season 2 looks great as well - I’m so pleased that Martha looks like she’s going to be able to go out on her own and not have to rely on The Doctor who have her own identity. James Marsters and Alan Dale are enticing bonuses as well!
The episode certainly lived up to its reputation in both respects, it certainly did have X-factor and the general way the theme of the episode was kept up with all the young-uns was enjoyable.
Marissa and Lindsey’s crisp awkwardness was just perfect. Marissa’s faint attempt at a smile, Lindsey’s subtle shifting - it was so believable and so good to watch it looked almost artistic, Mischa and Lindsey both did a great job in this scene, the chuckle-worthy “I like your backpack” scene (the worst compliment I’ve ever heard, haha!) Also in the burger scene - speaking of, it’s nice to see the show poke fun at itself for all it’s girls being “perfectly” thin (a matter of opinion there) and magnificently gorgeous. Lindsey’s awkwardness about having to try to look good by eating low-carb lunches was nice to see - they do know there are real not automatically rich and fabulous people in the world. The pre-Bait Shop scene was perfect - all of it. When Lindsey started gazing at Marissa’s pictures of Ryan (she’s clearly still in love with the guy) and that feeling of inferiority in her deepened, in every aspect that was just saddening, but in a way that makes good TV. The way Marissa and Lindsey have been contrasted is just perfection. Marissa’s stylishness to Lindsey’s more-modest fashion sense, Lindsey’s intelligence to Marissa’s more…modest intelligence, Marissa’s wilder lifestyle and Lindsey’s safer and frankly saner lifestyle, the list goes on. And it even reflects in Ryan. Ryan is so much calmer with Lindsey than he is with Marissa, softer. I think it’s great how even though the two have a family link, their greatest connection is the one thing they have in common despite all their difference - Ryan. Lindsey’s whole character gives hope for the underdog out there, which I think is great!
Now for the central plot - well Alex really likes girls. Huh. My lesbo-love-o-meter is going into overdrive. I just have this love for lesbian couples on television, it pretty much started with Tara/Willow on Buffy. If I ever watch The L Word - I think my head may explode (because of all the good, not bad.) As much as I initially loved the idea of Alex being bisexual, the main ex of the episode i.e. Jodie was just incredibly whiny, I suppose she wasn’t meant to be likeable. I can see why Alex ditched her. Poor Ryan being put in the middle, burdened with the big secret of the lesbian variety. Though… you cracked, man. He really does suck at keeping a secret - nice continuity from last episode. I do understand why Seth reacted so dramatically, but c’mon Seth, you could see things from Alex’s point of view couldn’t you? That’s one of the things that irritate me about his Seth, he can be great but sometimes such a baby. It’s not all about you, boy. But I suppose these flaws make him more three-dimensional as a character. Revealing she has a lesbian ex can’t exactly be the easiest thing to do. Oh - one of the best quotes of the episode from Zach - “So are you gonna get with a guy?” Screams slash potential! And who knew Zach has such a mouth?:
Summer: So, I'm sorry for being Ultra-Bitch 2000 tonight.
Zach: Tonight?
Keeping with the great quotes…
Ryan: (to a very drunk Lindsay) How much did you drink tonight?
Lindsay: I dunno ... as much as Marissa.
Ryan: That's a lot.
Haha! :D
The Marissa/Alex ending, simple but - woah. Intense. That’s one gaze into Alex’s eyes that would change her life for … seven episodes. Seven (mostly great and hot) episodes. Ok, I’m not really this shallow, just to mention. Marissa/Alex - here we come.
I saw St. Trinians yesterday with a friend and it was great fun and worked so well as a light-hearted comedy I thought. Rupert Everett was brilliantly hilarious as both the headmistress and the rich and posh father bringing his daughter to this school and overall the cast and film as a whole worked well. It started comically with nervous Annabell Fritton making an nervous entrance and various explosions, skulls and dead animals making her feel just welcome.
As a person who goes to an English boarding school, it was quite entertaining seeing the ways of the typical boarding school being mocked and over exaggerated - pranks in the dorm, drunk matrons, being told over and over again that “the school’s reputation is at stake”, negotiating school fees, school inspections, alcohol, pot smoking etc. And it was interesting seeing schools that I know being shown in a new light on the big screen. The crime-related twist on everything educational in the school is also a lot of fun.
Mischa Barton’s was just.. abysmal in the film. Any Mischa Barton bashers would have had a field day after seeing this, she couldn’t act to save her life in this film, she was the most unconvincing character out of all of them and the film could have gone on well enough without her in it. A part of me is glad she didn’t attempt to maul an English accent as well, so it could have been worse. Don’t get me wrong, I love her, but here she was just below average. She didn’t show off some of the acting talent I know she actually does have. Though I did enjoy seeing her, because - it’s her.
Though the plot was clearly insane, it was easy to suspend belief for an hour and a half, with laugh out loud, pop-culture references slotted in here and there, if you want a good laugh, right now this is the film to see.
Oh and just a random thing I have to share.. I'm in love with this new Nickelback song, so much.. and I don't see many music videos as great as this. Eliza Dushku makes it all the better.
