I assisted with the kid's Christmas pageant rehearsal today. My job was to help coach the kids through their songs by plinking out the melody on the piano (fortunately, an actual musician will be accompanying them during the actual pageant as I'd not seen the music before today and the show is next week. I don't believe I have sufficient musical guts to pull off such a performance or to keep a straight face while so doing).
It appears the arranger was getting bored with the normal Christmas carols since they kept changing keys on me every single verse. This made sight reading the music a bit difficult, possibly complicated by the fact I was playing half turned around, trying to keep an eye on the kids. My goal deteriorated from getting them all singing at the beginning of the day to keeping them in roughly the same part of the room as the piano at the end. Thankfully some parents and older kids were around to help. I have no idea how to corral children efficiently.
Also, may I note that it is immensely funny to hear kids attempting to sing some of the later verses in traditional carols. Imagine, if you will, a gaggle of four- to seven-year-olds struggling with
"Veiled in flesh the Godhead see
Hail the incarnate Deity"
I have no idea what we'll end up with next Sunday, but I'm sure it will be cute.
