Best Movie of the Year!
Warning: There are spoilers. So if you haven't watched the movie, stop.
Transformers the Movie was nothing short of spectacular.
The Autobots and Decepticons looked rather different from the their cartoon version, but I liked the change. I wondered why Bumblebee wasn't a beetle but I understood why he had to be a Camaro. I was shocked to see Optimus without the mask.
The movie brought back memories from childhood. Optimus Prime was portrayed like he always is - noble and a true leader. The Man. Ironhide was his usual tough guy self. Ratchet was there. Jazz was there with his coolness. I was amazed that he fought Megatron face-to-face. I remember Ironhide always charging at Megatron but not Jazz.
But the most endearing of all Transformers was, of course, Bumblebee. He loved humans, after all. I used to think of him as a wimp back in the cartoon age - the one who always tries to avoid trouble but always get caught and not really a good fighter. But the movie really showed a very human Bumblebee - even trying to help a guy win a girl. And who knows the value of sacrifice - I guess every Autobot knows this.
The Decepticons did well as the villains. The movie showed how capable Starscream was as Megatron's general. Unfortunately, Megatron always points out his failures. Megatron was the ultimate baddy. And he really kicked the Autobots' butts.
The human characters made the movie more interesting. They weren't just there to witness the battle. They actually were part of it.
Overall, the movie is so good that it deserves watching a second or third time - like Frank Miller's 300. And it's very good that I won't hesitate to buy an original DVD copy for my collection.
