Oh wow, Joan Jett was actually pretty hot back in the day. And for that matter, still doing alright for someone who's on the other side of 50. I bring up Joan Jett now partly because I've been a little caught up in the publicity machine for The Runaways movie, and partly because my Rock Band fan art of my own band is still lolling along.

And also, partly because for the longest time I hadn't associated Joan Jett with someone who was easy on the eyes. You see, this all began back in the early 90s when I was still a wee lad. I had stayed up late on occasions to watch the local broadcast of The Late Show on the ABC. At that time, said show was a sketch comedy show being shown at the the adult hour of 8:30pm. Being a sketch comedy show, there wasn't a whole lot on there that made a great deal of sense to a 8 year old boy, but there was one segment that still stands out to me to this day.

At the end of some of their shows, they'd finish with a musical number by some big, famous band. The gag was that one of the guys on the show always "misheard" who they were meant to book, and would get someone with a similar name and no musical talent to perform the same number. So for example, instead of Aerosmith, they got television and radio announcer Pete Smith, and instead of getting on Huey Lewis, they got Olympic swimmer Hayley Lewis.

Getting back Joan Jett, the very first time I watched that segment on the show, they were supposed to get Joan on to sing I Love Rock N' Roll but instead ended up getting Joan Kirner. Joan Kirner at the time was former Premier of Victoria - ie. the person at the top running the state, not too dissimilar from a governor. That's right, Joan Kirner was a politician.

I have with me a photo of Joan Kirner from that era, so let's do a little comparison. Here is a photo of Joan Jett being Joan Jett.

And here is Joan Kirner, in the style of Joan Kirner.

As a result of that, for the last 15 years I've had this Pavlov's Dog association every time I hear I Love Rock N' Roll with, well uh, see for yourself.
