Hanji Zoe is not a reckless Titan-obsessed idiot.
In my on-going attempts to end the horrible mischaracterization of Hanji Zoe I came upon this moment from the Ilse’s Notebook OVA.
After Hanji follows the abnormal into the clearing where it starts smashing into the tree where Ilse’s remains are stored Hanji dismounts from her horse but before she starts approaching the Titan we see her get her 3DMG controller out of it’s holster.
Switching gears for a moment: The preview for the first part of the A Choice with No Regrets gave us some interesting new shots of the 3DMG. Particularly how the hooks are aimed: by little slider knobs on the controller device.
Now back to Hanji: When the Titan leapt around to attack her she instantly used her 3DMG to get away into a tree. When the hooks shoot out of the hip device we see that it was already aimed toward her backside.
So when Hanji got the controller out of it’s holster what she was doing was aiming it behind her so she could make a quick getaway if the Titan suddenly tried to attack her.
Hanji Zoe is not a reckless Titan-obsessed idiot. Even she doesn’t approach a Titan without an escape plan. She knows that titans; especially unpredictable abnormals, are dangerous.
