Every night recently I've been on a music kick that usually lasts until 3 in the morning. I don't know why...but I like it. Here's a taste of some of the stuff I've been listening to:
Puccini's "Un Bel Di Vedremo" from Madame Butterfly
I think this aria, and the whole opera for that matter, is so beautiful. In the aria, Butterfly sings about waiting on a hill and one day finally seeing her lover's ship arrive in the port. The music is full of so much hope but heartache at the same time...very moving. The Humming Chorus from this opera is pretty cool too. Also, listening to it reminds me of my time with Jennifer, which I oddly like. It is fascinating how someone can be so embedded in your life after so long. Lots of things (especially music) remind you of that person or spark a memory from your time with him or her.
Shostakovich's Andante from Piano Concerto No. 2
Another beautiful piece. It has really struck my fancy recently. The melody in the piano part is very lyrical and singing, while the left hand provides just simple arpeggios. Definitely has that Russian Romantic sound. I would like to find the music to it and learn it.
Steve Reich's Cello Counterpoint
T331 kind of reawakened my interest in minimalism. The piece is for solo cello over a prerecorded background which contains seven different lines. It is a journey through so many different images and moods...fun to listen to. My recording is of Maya Beiser performing it. A great musician and a gorgeous girl.
Mark Isham's A Really Good Cloak from the movie Crash
It's been awhile since I have seen this movie, but I think this is the music that is happening as the little girl is getting shot at by that dude. I think I heard this, or some other piece from the soundtrack, at Corey's which inspired me to download it. I love how it is so simple, both harmonically and melodically, yet evokes so much emotion.I remember the scene from the movie and how it was a bright, sunny winter day, and at one point, the sunlight totally engulfs the camera view. I see that image every time during the climax.
California Guitar Trio - Pulp Fiction Theme
Because it's cool?
In other news, I went to see the movie Once at the Esquire theater in Clifton. What a fantastic movie. I definitely recommend it. Trailer here:
