I got word today that the company is sending me to Ponchatoula Louisiana for the rollout of our new desktop standards. I like the idea of traveling for the company and meeting more end users, but I'm worried about what to do with my down time. Typically, whenever I travel for business purposes, I don't do anything but work. Days are filled with work, work and work and nights are filled with hotel room meals and cable television. I'm traveling down with another employee who has a reputation of being a party guy. I'm hoping he isn't one of these guys who needs to go out every night and is going to want me to tag along. If he does, I will have to find a way of declining without damaging our working relationships. I've been to too many trade shows and out of town conventions to know that the mild mannered co-workers can turn into a completely different person without the constraints of the office setting. It's not my scene and I would rather do a good job for the company and get nothing but high marks for my efforts.
All that said, I wouldn't dismiss the idea of finishing the work a day early in order to spend an evening in New Orleans before I get back on the plane for the trip home. Can you say Bourbon Street?
