I'm not a big fan of ice dancing either as an Olympic sport or in general. I loved Torville and Dean's Bolero, but I've considered that the exception rather than the rule.

Tonight's ice dancing derby is changing my mind. I still think it's a bit silly, but the fact that some of the top couples in the world weren't able to pull off the programs they needed in order to be competitive demonstrates, to me, that the new ice dancing rules force competitors to their athletic limits, which is the whole point of sport and certainly the point of the Olympic games.

I'm sure it was awful for the several couples that splattered on the ice, particularly the French competitor who was removed from the venue by an ambulance, but finally ice dancing is understanding that "no pain, no gain" is not simply a cliche.
