Grassroots progressive political powerhouse Moveon.org published the results of its priorities survey today. Out of "hundreds of thousands" of members, 8.6% put gay and lesbian issues as one of the top three for Moveon.org to tackle in the coming political cycle. that puts us at eighth on the list after "hold the Bush administration accountable." More liberals, according to Moveon.org, want Cheney in jail than care about if you can get married.
"Restore civil liberties" beat us out, and we haven't even gotten them yet.
Evidently, we're only more important than increasing access to higher education and reforming elections.
That's why Barack Obama can invite Rick Warren to make the invocation at his inauguration. And, frankly, that's why Prop 8 passed in California.
It's not just the left wing that takes gay and lesbian support for granted. It's gay and lesbians who take the left wing for granted. Progressive politics are a busy place and if we can't get them to put our needs higher than eighth in this country, we aren't going to get anywhere.
You can be angry at black people for passing Prop 8. You can be angry at Barack Obama for inviting Rick Warren to the party. You can even be angry at New Line Cinema for holding Milk till after the election. But until we get angry at the progressives that consistently put our issues at the back of the Merry Pranksters' school bus, we're not going to get anywhere.
Moveon.org doesn't do a great job of statistical reporting on this. They say there were 806,707 "votes." I don't know if that means 806,707 people voted or if of the people voting 806,707 issues were voted for since each person got three choices. If the former, 145,207 people out of 806,707, or 18%, care about gay rights. If the latter, 23,126 people have any interest.
