i bumped into the most amazing bear documentary last night on tv
it was following the story of a cub and his mama
in the wilderness of japan somewhere
from the cub's birth
all the way to his first steps of independance.
bears have nothing to fear
they are not threatened by any other
therefore, honest documentaries like this can be made
following their paths in a most truthful sense
and you can tell that they are not bothered one slight
by the shadowing group of people and cameras
because, frankly
they have better things to think about.
upon the last night
of the mother and cub's time together
before they separate for good into separate hibernation dens
they are gifted with a great blessing
a recent storm has beached whale to shore.
drawn by the whales' scent
a group of bears gather at night to feast
together
no fighting or arguing
they equally share in this great offering
and just watching the bears celebrate
so beautiful
as they clearly share their excitement and gratitude.
then suddenly
the bears disperse
running away in fear
the sense that something is wrong
and sure enough
along the shore comes strolling along
a HUGE male bear
the biggest bear i have ever seen!
so big i can't even explain to you how big
probably from the jurassic age
anyway,
he's big, he's tough, he's angry, and he's hungry
his greed takes over him
as he chases away one of the female bears slow to vacate the scene
fights her with growls and claws
knocking her clear out of "his" territory
cause he ain't about to share this feast with anybody.
camera shoots back over to the whale
and mama and her cub are still there!
ever so calmly eating away like nothing is happening
i'm thinking to myself, "go! get away! he's coming to get you!"
i can barely watch to see what happens
in anticipation that all is about to go terribly wrong
the big meanie comes over to the whale
and no sooner than he can get even a growls worth in
the mama takes charge
she unleashes a protective beast within her
one bigger than a bear 10 times the huge bears' size
and she scolds him like nobody's business
slapping him in the face
i could swear i could hear her saying,
"JUST WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE!? DOES YOUR MAMA KNOW YOU BEHAVE THIS WAY? WELL, SHE WILL NOW AFTER I HAVE A TALK WITH HER! YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF! ACTING LIKE SUCH A GREEDY FOOL! GET OUT OF HERE! YOU OWE ALL THOSE BEARS AN APPOLOGY! AND UNTIL YOU DO, YOU AIN'T GETTIN' NONE OF THIS WHALE! YOU HEAR ME!? NONE OF IT! GET OUT OF HERE! GEESH, YOU'RE GONNA LIVE A VERY LONELY LIFE ACTING LIKE THAT! GEESH!"
putting him back in his place
he is suddenly ashamed
and becomes very, very small
relucantly he backs away
getting nothing of the whale whatsoever.
mama and baby eat on
an entire whale left just for them
ain't nothing getting in between mama and her cub
no less on their last night together.
i'm forever in awe of what i saw
now that's what i call
power.
