Thanks to a random email I got regarding my
last post here I've found the new home of what was previously
myspace.com/kannoyoko!
The maintainer's new home for weekly Kanno music selections is
myspace.com/yokokannoradio.
He explains, oddly enough, on a
rottentomatoes forum page:
Hello all to those who have a MySpace page... I now have a new MySpace music account where I act like a DJ featuring Ms. Kanno's music... Here's the page:
http://www.myspace.com/yokokannoradio
I used to manage
www.myspace.com/kannoyoko but I've deleted it since everybody thought I was Yoko Kanno... I had exactly 3,346 friends too--best part was I never invited a single person out of them all--they all added me... Goes to show the amount of Yoko Kanno fans loitering about... But this time round is a bigger and better webpage...
Anywayz, feel free to join if any of you peeps want...
Here's this weeks music selections and the maintainer's thoughts on them
This round of music is a collection of songs from the male artists featured in our friends list... Don't forget to show them your support!....
1. "Nowhere And Everywhere" - Sung by Steve Conte and was the first collaboration between Mr. Conte and Yoko Kanno... It's a song that's reminiscent of The Beatles with the first four chords of "I Am The Walrus" as its inspiration... Thus, a full-fledged track is born... The wonderful lyrics also lend a hand to the inspirational track...
2. "Next Time" - The next track is sung by Mr. Francesco Sansalone from the album Song To Fly... This track clearly demonstrate the playful nature of the song with its changing tunes and the effective use of Mr. Sansalone's voice in a droll yet spooky manner... Kind of reflective of the lyrics if you ask me... We hope to hear more from Mr. Sansalone...
3. "Dear John" - sung by Scott Matthew, yet his voice is purposedly blurred that you may have a hard time distinguishing what he's saying... And yes, he's singing in proper grammatical English... Nontheless, the electric guitars and Mr. Matthew's voice interchange with such vibrance that it still manages to be a very catchy tune...
4. "ELM" - Sung and played in the guitar by Pierre Bensusan... This troubadour-esque tune is played during a pivotal moment in Cowboy Bebop... The melancholy nature of the song is revealed and effectively shifts the mood of the scene to sway the emotions of the audience to a much more integral point as the events unfold onscreen... And all this is sung without words... Quite wonderful...
5. "Scooters" - Sung by James Wendt (lead singer of Staireo) and is the opening track of the live-action movie Honey And Clover (an adaptation of the popular Japanese manga/anime)... The song is also a clear adaptation of ELO's "Mr. Bluesky"... Though Yoko Kanno's version's tune is significantly different and in this DJ's humble opinion improved upon the original it drew inspiration upon... It's too catchy...
6. "Boys About 16" - sung by Shigyo Iwasaka found in the first OST of the anime Turn-A Gundam... The somewhat R&B-esque song may take a while to grow upon but once it does, you'll find the track to be one of the most catchiest tune in the YK canon... Must have something to do with the fantastic arrangement of the song as well...
Enjoy the music!...
My thoughts:
1. "Nowhere And Everywhere" ««««« Oh my gosh, one of my all time favorite Kanno songs. Love the music, love the lyrics.
2. "Next Time" «What a crazy contrast in the same album. This is unfortunately one of my few disliked Kanno songs.
3. "Dear John"«««I love the instrumentation, but the muted vocals get on my nerves a bit if I'm not just listening to them as background music.
4. "ELM"«««Nice lyrical background music.
5. "Scooters"«««««Gah, two of my favorite Kanno tracks in one playlist?! At first all I could hear when I listened to this song was
"Mr. Bluesky" which I knew from the
"Eternal Sunshine.." soundtrack, but now I like it even more.
6. "Boys About 16"«««Ok pop song
What do you guys think?
