Only losers become American Idol

May 31, 2012 04:15

As most people in this country are very much divided in their opinions with the Corona Impeachment verdict, I on the other hand will be straying from it for the meantime. I was very affected by it during the early days and I was stressed by it. Annoyed, disappointed, angry, pissed, jaded. So I decided to steer clear from that issue for now and let the smoke clear.

Right now I am just gonna write about what I feel about this season's American Idol. Yes, Jessica Sanchez' not being crowned as American Idol despite being head to head with Philip Phillips became a national pasttime. My Facebook newsfeed was filled with pro-Jessica and anti-Jessica. I didn't want to jump into the ring so as usual I let the smoke clear first.

First things first, what is my impression of this year's American Idol? Was it more kickass than last year? I have to say no it wasn't and not even close. The amount of talent from the finalists last year was simply over the top. This year's finalists was a joint convention of newbies and rejects. Oooh, I'm mean! I'm just getting warmed up.

One thing I noticed early on is how tame Steven Tyler has been. He was all over the place and there was so much Tylerisms I could collect from last year. I mean I was literally taking down notes. But this year, no. Not so much. Not much at all. What I do collect now are snapshot images of each outfit he wears on each episode. Damn...I should have done this for last season too. The guy is a sight for sore eyes. I LOVE HIS FASHION SENSE! Whenever the judges are introduced and they do their walk towards the centerstage, my eyes are onto Steven. Forget JLo. And Randy...just NO. Randy Jackson is the perfect example that all that money cannot buy style and taste.

One of the things that we look forward to watching on AI is the audition episodes but it all came and went. There were some highlights here and there but not enough to stand out vividly to memory. We were just waiting for it to be over and find out who made it into the live show.

And finally during the live show, we could only count a very few as to who really stood out. I only liked three people namely, Skylar Laine, Joshua Ledet and Elise Testone. My hubby WANTED to like Jessica too but there was not enough ooomph in her. I couldn't care less. I never liked her since day one.

You expect that at the live show and with the people who made it this far that things would heat up and there would be an amazing heart-stopping performances, right? You think that the stage would be more extravaganza.

No.

It was painfully obvious that American Idol executives must have noticed how few the real talents were this year and decided to keep the production cost at a minimum. This is evidenced by the fact that they were already less than ten when they finally hauled off to the mansion. Observe the wardrobe choices of these people. Last year was such a raging fashion show. Not only were the talents pleasing to the ears but they were pleasing to watch. It came to a point that I was looking forward to what Naeema Adedapo and James Durbin and Paul MacDonald were gonna wear each episode. Not this season though. They hired Tommy Hillfiger as fashion consultant but Duston suspected that Hillfiger must have paid AI so he can get some TV exposure. I mean with the way the contestants looked, they were pretty much have to fend for themselves. Tommy was merely giving lip service to them. If anyone stood out and exuded a sense of personal style was Elise Testone. That girl knows what she wants to wear and owns it. The rest had a lot of hits and misses. I remember Erika van Pelt got to chop off her hair and dyed it black according to Hillfiger's suggestion. She ended up getting booted off that very day. Thank you, Tommy! :)

This season we also got to watch a Jermaine Jones who has a criminal history get disqualified which was too bad really since he was one of the very few who had some talent. AI confronted him about concealing his criminal past which is actually kinda goofy on both their parts. Doesn't AI do a proper security check first especially at this stage in the competition? And Jermaine dude...you know you have a criminal history, what possessed you to compete and put yourself in a predicament of letting the whole world know that you had a run with the law? I'm also amazed that law enforcement only caught up with him at the finals. The dude has been around since the auditions! Wow.

With goodie boy-faced Jeremy Rosado booted off and Jermaine's disqualification, AI was left with a Top 11.

I applaud Steven Tyler's comment about Heejun Han's performance on the Billy Idol theme. He was clearly not impressed. Heejun has always been amusing to watch but this is not America's Most Amusing Person contest.

This is American Idol (read this line with Ryan Seacrest's voice in your head, ya hear?)

And don't you get tired watching the camera making closeups at the saved contestants whenever someone gets eliminated? Do you really think they're sad because someone's leaving? Are you kidding me? The real reason they're crying only mean this..

"OH THANK GOD! THAT WASN'T ME!" boo-freakin-hoo!

My memory of the few who remained is not that memorable anymore particularly those I do not like. I know Van Pelt was kicked out. Heejun also got kicked out since he didn't show much improvement really but we're not worried perhaps some KPop producers will recruit him. The future looks bright.

Falsetto boy Deandre Brackensick with the nice hair was tedious to watch and listen to. We had to skip him. We couldn't stand anymore how much he tries to milk that falsetto voice he's got. We were relieved to see him go.

Emo boy Colton Dixon with the stylish hair was also a big relief when he got eliminated as well. It was strange 'cause he was kinda likable last time and now that we were watching each of his performances, it's like listening to a bratty teenage boy whining about issues he made up so he can be acceptable with the fashionable angsty kids. I mean REALLY?? His rendition of Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" was so bad and I highly recommend that song to anyone who wanna dedicate it to their worst enemy. If you wanna lose friends in your life, yeah make them listen to that song. I don't even like Lady Gaga but he sang it in such a way that it made me hate Lady Gaga even more and Colton Dixon.

We were hoping against hope that another deadweight was gonna leave the competition and that would be Hollie Cavanaugh. We just call her the 'sociopath'. That kid does NOT FEEL anything. She has a strong voice okay but she has zero emotion. As far as we're concerned, she could have been better off singing TaTu's "Robot Robot" song. It would have fit her perfectly. She sings a song and just uses up other people's emotion for the song because she has none of it. Several times she has been caught saying she didn't know what the song actually meant and chose it anyway 'cause it's nice. What the??

But we were still hopeful since Elise Testone, Skylar Laine and Joshua Ledet were still in the race. Elise Testone's rockstar performance of Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love" was one of the major highlights of the show.

Now THAT is what I'm talking about! (try saying this line with Randy Jackson's voiee in your head, ya hear?)

Oh man...I would play that episode over and over because it was so DAMN GOOD!! I'm not even a Led Zep fan but she made me her fan even more. She totally OWNED it. She made a classic very relevant to the kids of today. She made it cool. She was so amazing to watch and calling the shots onstage. Plus she wore the same style of pants Steven Tyler was wearing. How cool is that? It's her songs that are keepable and have high replay value. I'd pay to watch her sing. Yeah, she's THAT good. She was one of the most stable amongst the contestants. She was really shining. I guess the problem is that she's so good and she's too good for the competition. Her exit performance when she got eliminated was one of the classiest and kickass exits I've ever watched. She was so confident. She sang "Whole Lotta Love" with such fire like she wasn't shaken at all by her leaving the competition. I liked how she didn't even bother to do any niceties with the saved contestants and simply went straight to the judges instead. A handshake with Randy, a kiss to JLo and a quick duet with Steven Tyler. She did it all like a BOSS. And THAT's how you do an exit. Watch and learn, kids. Watch and learn.

Unfortunately, despite little miss 'sociopath' being consistently at the Bottom 3, she did not get eliminated and in her place, the one who did was my bet Skylar Laine which is really unfortunate. I really liked her since the auditions. I call her a 'dynamite'. That girl not only knows how to sing but she's feeling it. When she sings, you can hear a story. It gets you off your feet and you listen and have fun at the same time. She is definitely a country singer but she had that distinctive storytelling classic country feel to her voice which I admire. You can sense that she lives and breathes the song she sings. She is also a tough chick. Her duet with Reba McEntire was AMAZING. She totally carried herself well the entire time. Not a shred of insecurity in that girl. She's really a dynamite!

With two of our bets gone, we were riding on Joshua Ledet's soulful train towards becoming the next AI. Though he was surprisingly at the bottom 3 once which was obviously a big DUH moment, he had been consistently at the top and received so many standing ovations from the judges. I mean the guy seemed invincible. How can you ever get any better than better. The guy could interpret songs like you cannot believe. He was 'OWNING' songs left and right. He's so good, it's insane! His vocals is just SICK! And he knows how to carry himself onstage. He got the moves and timing. The dude is simply fantastic! Jimmy Iovine was already talking about what song he will be singing in the album.

With Hollie the 'sociopath' out of the race, we were having a deep sigh of relief. That kid has overstayed her welcome. She should have been out of the race a long, long time ago. It was a grave injustice that she stayed and Skylar got eliminated. With her gone, we can now just focus on Joshua. You can imagine the shock we had when Joshua was the one who got eliminated instead leaving Jessica Sanchez and Phillip Phillips in the race. That was the end of the road for us. Duston annouced that if Joshua never made it to become AI, he will never watch the live shows anymore next season. We will just watch the auditions and that's it.

True enough, we didn't even bother to watch the Top 2 perform anymore. We were supposed to skip the season finale as well if not for Aerosmith playing live onstage. Yeah, now we HAD TO watch it. It was spectacular and all layers of awesome. Steven Tyler is totally in his element. It also shows who got more star power between him and JLo. heheh! JLo had to perform onstage three times. Aerosmith performed only once but at the finale. Beat that! It was also another perfect opportunity to promote the upcoming album and concert tour. wooohooo!!!

So the battle is between Jessica Sanchez and Phillip Phillips. Two people we don't give a rat's ass who wins. It could be either of them and there was no point for celebration in that. Filipinos suddenly became obsessively supportive of this priveleged teenager who is only half Filipino. Where was all this obsessive support for Thia Megia last year, huh? None.

It got so bad that I would see posts on Facebook about how Pinoys can vote for Jessica to win AI even though you are not a US resident. I mean, they literally taught people how to hack. How pathetic is that? That's just sad. What's worse that if Jessica did win, it makes you wonder if she only won because some people were willing to cheat for her.

I am not saying Jessica is a bad singer. I think she's pretty talented and she has very strong vocals. I don't really care she's a privileged skinny teeny bopper whose favorite activity is to go shopping. But I refused to get suck into the whole mess about giving her my support JUST BECAUSE she has some Filipino blood in her veins.

No. I only support people I believe in because they're good and worthy. I don't support people just because they have family living in the same country as I do. That's lame, man. I hate this whole misguided nationalism/patriotism blah that spread around like a bad case of dandruff. Do you know how many "Jessicas" exist in this country alone? It's almost like they all came from the same production plant from the same mold. Sing like her. Move like her. Dress like her and even talk like her. Even do the pretentious half hand wave.

Why am I not surprised anymore? I am not impressed with her vocal fireworks, the way she hit the high notes and growl to give this effect like she actually knows what the heck she's singing about. It's all overrated. I have seen that same kind of performance in beauty pageants and singing contests on TV held for little girls. It's been going on for years. Jessica is no different. She sings just like that....just....like.... THAT. It's like watching a prized poodle singing in a super fancy dog show.

Yes. I told you before I was gonna be mean, right? So bite me. :)

Then there's Phillip Phillips who has become this year's American Idol continuing the tradition that only losers ever make it to the top in this show. Some people argued that the reason Jessica lost was because she's not white. Pfffftttt....can the argument get any LAMER THAN THAT??? What a racist thing to say! It's already lame enough that Phillip won and not Joshua who is clearly THE MOST TALENTED in the bunch. In the early days of the competition, we kinda liked Phillip who was being his own person and had this devil-may-care-whatever appeal to him. But that sort of appeal got old pretty fast especially with the way he seem to intentionally wear clothes that looks like he's just going to the mall or a store to get something. He hardly shaves. But oooh! He's being himself, right? You cannot argue with that.

Whatever.

Like Duston said, why is there a need for another Dave Matthews? I got to listen to a couple of Dave Matthews song and I could hear the comparison already and I don't even like Dave. What's so original about that? Phillips strains so much. It's like watching a guy in a perpetual state of constipation whenever he gets onstage. It was hard to watch really. Why does he have to eat the words? Dude, what has words ever done to you that you should eat them instead of singing them out? I mean REALLY? COME ON! I also think it was very disrespectful when Steven Tyler threw him a scarf to add into his wardrobe and he simply threw it to the girls in the audience. What the hell??? James Durbin would have added that scarf on his next act. Heck, even emo boy Colton would have made use of it. But not Phillip he's much "too himself" to do that.

Yeah right.

I have to make a special commendation for The Queen Extravaganza performance. OMG!!! THAT WAS SO AMAZING!!! I wish I could get tickets to watch the concert. Now THAT is how you do a show. That's one of the few very awesome highlights of this year's season.

So there ya have it! Hah! FINALLY I got to unload my thoughts and clear up some space in my head for better and healthier memories and events in the future. Am I looking forward to watching next season, that depends on one person alone.

The ONLY reason I managed to watch the show properly started last year because of the one and only Steven Tyler. That reason remained true even at this season. If he renews his contract with AI next year, sure we'll watch it again. But if he announces that he can't make it anymore then what's the point?
