The Gozitan capital is crowned by the walled Citadel, the hilltop city, and all roads in Gozo lead to it.
Gozo was plagued by raiding corsairs and Saracens, who took the people into slavery.
Life was so dangous that, right until 1673 the population was requided by law,
for their own safty, to spend every night within the Citadel built by the Knights of Malta.
