Fire days?

Life in Southern California is odd -- these fires are really like nothing else I've ever dealt with.  When you walk outside at our apartment, it smells like someone has a campfire going a block or two away -- at first, kind of a nice smell.  The sky here is still mostly blue during the day, though a little hazy.  The crazy winds from the other day have left a coating of dust on EVERYTHING on our patio, which is disgusting -- but since it's not really done with things yet, I haven't beat out the cushions, swept the slab, etc.  The poor plants have a coat on their leaves too & Lina is crabby because I won't let her out there to rub around and get way too dirty.

When you head up towards San Bernardino, you start to see more distinct layers of smoke -- hovering over the mountains, blowing west from the fires around Lake Arrowhead.  There are still little chunks of blue sky to be seen between the smoke & ground in the AM, but by afternoon, they're gone.  At lunchtime today, ashes were drifting out of the sky like a light drizzle -- I had to turn on my windshield wipes to clear it off before I drove.  The campfire smoke smell is very strong in San Bernardino -- overwhelming and it's making my sinuses & eyes act up.  I'm trying not to think about what I'm all breathing in & am keeping my car vent system on recirculate.  We are pretty sure that two of our outpatients have lost their homes, and are waiting to hear from another handful on how they are doing, if they are safe, etc.  The cancellations continue with our patient load, which allowed me to do quite a bit of Orientation today for the Senior PT role.  And on a side note, I found out today that my rehab director's brother also has bronchiectasis, which brings my count of people who have/know about the actual disease up to about 6.  An interesting "twist" -- and nice to know someone who knows why I'm coughing, not that I'm sick.  I have had one coworker move away from me at the table during meetings/lunch because I was coughing... it's like being back in grade school sometimes.

Husband & I are safe for now here, trying to keep an eye on things and thinking of all of those people who are losing homes, property, work, etc.  It's pretty much a regular week for us, though it doesn't feel like it is for anyone else.  Except that tonight, my left shoulder is sore in addition to my regular aches & pains.  Time for some Advil and bed methinks :)

being annoying, day to day...
