Cultural Capita

"How much?"

"Excuse me?"

"I said how much for this," the fat man waves a lazy arm over a dozen items. His flabby arms coming close to knock over a couple models of the Arts Center.

"The Melbourne set?" It seems surprising that anyone here, would take interest in that. "Wouldn't you prefer to look into some blue jeans, disco jams, the automobile. The Western Package, it's really sweet."

"No," He says dismissively shaking his head as his hands reach to fondle with a W Class tram set. "I want this."

I sell it to him, wondering how his grubby fingers will mar the statues of Burke and Wills, the electrical model set of trams, the figurines of Ned Kelly and Redmond Barry. It aches, but I know that it won't happen any other way. We have to peddle this culture, to whoever the buyer is. Industrials will not deign to look into a city of art, academics are no longer interested in the Australian Lingua, the entertainers have drawn out all the jokes, and the historians... well 200 years of colonial history does not go far.

No this city of artists will need to peddle more and more for it to be considered anything more than a living city. We need to thrive, or like the city of Berlin and London we will fall into the abyss of self analysis till nobody but ourselves will want our wares.

No, that cannot happen. We will bring cultural capita, we will be the new merchant princes of the 21st century, we will have art.

Something to keep the imagination going, a bit too dramatic at the end, not enough scene building, potentially could turn into a longer piece with a much bigger universe - other than nameless men and an opininated shop keeper (who has no wants besides that of furthering Melbourne's cultural capita, but that doesn't seem to be a driving force. Still play with it more and you'll have something.

Phd stuff is going well. Videau review is too - just a lot of writing and reading. I'm still worried that I might lose this *points up to the short creative* I'll become nothing but a dull academic with nothing but criticism and review to give out, instead of dreams and hopes. Or just crazy ideas. Current one for today is creating a Shadowrun:Returns mod set in Melbourne. That'd be pretty nice to throw together, even if it is a lot of work.

That or you could fix that comic up properly.

Or play saxophone more.

Or continue writing stories, but also submit them.

This sound familiar?

I guess at the end of the day I've got to make my priorities and stick with them, and that's what I've done subconsciously, if I want that to change or if I want to redirect it I need to hash it out - but I think that's already done. This semester I'm busy making myself look good for a scholarship + for my own research interests. With that done then! then ! maybe you can spread out to do all the things you want. Or better yet find some time now.

Sigh* it's like being in highschool again - except more self directed.

It's still fun though, just busy with plans within plans running around.

ideas, phd, more time, short short short story, culture, games
