I wrote this short story today while (not)listening to religion class. :)
It's about a long-time couple named Tim and Lily.
Let me know what you think! :D
Tim and Lily sat quietly across the room from each other, both unwilling to speak. In all of their arguments as a couple, this has proven to be the most heated one and no one is willing to give up and lose this chilly war of words and pride.
Lily's tears began to fall and she tried to hide them unsuccessfully. She didn't want to be the one to say sorry again. Tim's face softened at the sight of his girlfriend's saddened face and swollen eyes. She looked away, still unwilling to let herself give in to the emotions that were obviously already taking over her.
Tim stood up and started walking towards Lily. Her heart started pounding so wildly, she thought he could hear it. But as he got closer and closer, her mind, fickle as it had always been, wandered back and forth from thoughts of hugging and kissing Tim when this ordeal was finally over.
Now only inches away from her, she turned to face Tim and prepared herself to reach for him. She knew that no matter how many times they argue over the most trivial things in the world, their love, strong as it was, will always prevail in the end.
She hugged him as he approached and he hugged her back. He knew all too well the process of this. He was running it in his mind as he was walking towards her - every argument, every make-up kiss, every laugh, every hug. He smiled in his head as he reminisced. He thought of Lily, the girl he loved for six years. The only girl he ever loved and wanted this much.
But to Lily's surprise, Tim weakly pushed her away. He caressed her face and kissed her soft cheeks one by one. He stroked her hair and touched her nose. He smiled as his tears began to form in his eyes. They were sad and Lily noticed.
She grabbed his hand and kissed it with a look of defeat on her face. Finally, she spoke.
"I'm sorry," she whispered.
Tim shook his head and smiled once again. "Not your fault," he whispered back. "But I've come to this."
Lily, afraid of what he was about to say next, bowed down her head. She knew that the minutes of silence she let go by, with just the two of them sitting across each other, had gotten him to think much more than she had hoped. And she was afraid of the thoughts that had invaded her lover's mind.
"Tim, they're just thoughts," she said. "Don't give up."
But the unchanging expression on his face told Lily that he had made up his mind. Even before he walked over to her, he was decided already. She felt a big wave of frustration come over her. Her tears now flowed violently, one after the other, and she made no effort to suppress them now.
"I love you, Lily," Tim said at last. "But we've reached the limit of what we can be. There's no way to go from here anymore. It's been six years and it's been wonderful. But we both need to grow up. I can't do this anymore."
He caressed her face once more and kissed her forehead. She made no effort to stop him.
"You never change your mind," she said. "once it's made up."
They hugged each other as tightly as they could for they knew this was the last. And surprisingly enough, they felt every bit of it, every part of it that has turned into nothing more than what it was. A hug became just a hug, a kiss became just a kiss. And for six years, their relationship became just that.
But for tonight, the feeling that had been long lost between these two lovers came crashing down on them both. Their one last hug became something much more than any could ever expect. Emotions flowed between them and they couldn't let go of each other, afraid that the wonderful feeling would fly away if they do.
They felt how a hug should really feel - not just a hug, but two arms around you to protect you from all the harm in this world; two arms to reassure you that you are not alone and that you are loved in return. In his arms, Lily felt invincible. She felt too lucky to have had these arms around her for six whole years and yet so stupid to not have felt it sooner. And now it was time to let them go and it was killing her inside.
It was too late.
Tim finally let her go and she did too. He smiled one last time and walked away. She covered her face with her hands and cried her heart out. Then she heard the sound of the door closing.
She knew he was gone. Not only from this house, but from her life.
He was gone.
