Well, I missed the Michigan/OSU game last night, but I really needed sleep. Friday night was the brotherhood retreat, and yesterday was the Habitat project. So somewhere along the line on Friday night, it became too late to get any sleep, so we all stayed up. Then, after no sleep, it was time to drive to Detroit to work on the Habitat for Humanity house. First, they split us up into two groups, and my group went off to work on the deck of a house, but were just standing around waiting for something to do, until some guy came and told us we had to go do siding with the other group, because 10 people weren't enough. So we all went over there to stand around and do nothing, and every once in awhile the guy in charge would come by and give you something to do, but then get distracted before telling you how to do it. So Megan Jensen and I were cutting support boards to fit around and under the door, and they all fit, so we were happy, but then the guys working on the siding there had a problem, and the main guy came over and said that he'd given us the wrong-sized board to cut the pieces from, so they stuck out too far. WHOOPS. So then he tore out our whole morning's work and replaced it with styrofoam. That was cut to whatever size was close. Which made me feel really great about spending time cutting boards to the exact size.
So then after lunch, we started actually siding the house. 20 people is about 10 too many for that, so we were pretty much just standing around. This was about the time that it became clear that some of the people who had come along really weren't the type of people who should have come along. Like, don't get me wrong, some of them helped the best way they could (one girl kept handing nails to us so we could hang the siding faster), but another girl just kept insisting that she was going to hang the first row all by herself. So after we had to tear it off and start over about the 5th time, I kind of blew up at her. I felt bad, because I knew she just wanted to help, but it wasn't helping when she wouldn't hang it tightly enough, and then it took her 5 minutes to nail in each nail to about halfway to where it should have been. Plus, I was still frustrated over having had my whole morning's work torn out, and just wanted to get SOMETHING accomplished during the day. So after the incident, things went better. We managed to almost catch up to the people on the other side of the house, who had started significantly earlier than we had (there was a problem with the edge on the left, so we had to wait until they fixed it).
So then there were the problems with Melissa's car, but it was really cool how the chapter pulled together to support her so quickly and without even being asked. Special thanks to Meg, Michelle, Heidi, Thomas, and Jeremy, although I'm pretty sure none of them read this :).
So finally, got home, and fell asleep before the game even started, then woke up to see Tambellini tie the game at one, then fell back asleep. 14 hours later, woke back up, still tired :)
