SW3 Empires Chousokabe Story Mode Translation

Oct 14, 2012 19:28

Another one done! Actually, there's only the Mouri story left now and I'm not sure if I'll translate that one because the quality of the recordings I found aren't great. I really want to translate more story modes, especially the Tokugawa and Uesugi ones, but I haven't found any recordings of them wow look at this totally subtle hint.

ANYWAY, Chousokabe story mode! I really love the interaction between Gracia and Motochika here, and how they grew closer over the course of the story.

Notes:
1. This translation is based on the recording here. As usual, it is recommended that you play the recording while reading since their voice and tone add a lot to their characterisation.

2. The recording linked above is just the conversation events, without any of the battles or in-between stuff. So I actually don't know when a chapter begins or ends, or when battles take place. I've guessed where they should go based on context and with the help of the game wiki, but I probably got some of them wrong. Let me know if you catch any mistakes! o7

3. Speech quirks.
- Motochika: Motochika's speech tends to be very poetic and dramatic, which is probably rather obvious. There are some words and phrases that he uses repeatedly, the most noticeable among them would be 上等(joutou) and 凄絶に(seizetsu ni), which I translate as 'excellent' and 'magnificently'. They kinda stick out, and it's intentional.

- Gracia: Gracia makes a lot of nonsensical sounds like 'homu', 'hawawa', 'mumu' etc. I thought of leaving them in as they are, but they look weird since they are Japanese 'words' and using sound effects in speech is weirder in English than in Japanese. So I've omitted them in some parts, and used 'hmm', 'mmm', 'whoa' as replacement in other parts... but you'll get them if you play the recording.

4. The title of the first chapter is actually 'wakako to hime', a reference to Motochika's childhood nickname and Gracia's status.

Chapter 1: The Princess and the Girl

Cutscene

Akechi Mitsuhide, an Oda general, had left his beloved daughter at home while he went to the battlefield. However, Gracia ended up following him. The girl who had led a sheltered life was of age and could not suppress her curious nature. Thus, Gracia successfully infiltrated. She should have been able to observe the world outside her home but...

Gracia: Huh... is this a dream?
Gracia: Mm... I must be dreaming...

Gracia: Whoa, I completely overslept!
Gracia: Huh? Where's Father?
Motochika: ...Could it be... that you're Mitsuhide's daughter?
Gracia: Mm, indeed you're right!
Gracia: Mitsuhide is my father!

Mitsuhide: I didn't think that the sea would be so rough...
Mitsuhide: I'm back. Have you been good?
Mitsuhide: ...She's not here?
Mitsuhide: Where on earth has she gone off to again?!

Event: Motochika and Gracia

Gracia had infiltrated the ship's cargo hold to head to the battlefield, intending to watch her father's battle. However, not long after the battle broke out, the cargo fell into the sea. Hidden in the cargo and tossed about by the waves, Gracia crossed the sea and arrived at Tosa.

Gracia: Tell me! Who are you? How do you know my father?
Motochika: I am Chōsokabe Motochika and Mitsuhide is my friend. I've met you before, before your coming of age.
Gracia: Ooh, Chōsokame! Aren't you from Tosa... mmm?
Gracia: Could it be... this is Tosa?
Motochika: This is Tosa. And I am Chōsokabe Motochika, not 'kame*'.
Gracia: This is bad... I need to hurry back or Father will be worried. Tell me, how many hours will it take to walk from Tosa to Ōmi?
Motochika: Do you plan to walk back? What a naive princess.
Gracia: I am naive. That's why I want to see for myself how the world works, starting with Father's battles.
Motochika: You own up to your ignorance readily. As expected of Mitsuhide's daughter.
Gracia: Hmm? It's expected of me to be naive? How interesting you are, Chō... zogobe.
Motochika: Chōsokabe. Well then, clever and wise princess, if you wish to return to Ōmi, you will have to cross these raging waves.
Gracia: I see, so Ōmi's across the sea. In that case, I would like to borrow your boat.
Motochika: Unfortunately, the land across the sea is controlled by our enemy. Even if you have a boat, nothing of you will reach Ōmi except your soul.
Gracia: Even so, I want to go back! Father will be worried... I want to see Father!

Motochika turned his back on Gracia and silently began to walk off.

Gracia: Wait! Chō... zu... gogu! Are you going to just leave me behind?
Motochika: Call me Motochika. The cries of your soul resounds in my chest. I will prepare for your journey home... magnificently.

*kame = turtle

Event: I want to go back to Sakamoto

Gracia: Motochika, tell me! Can't we set off yet? When can I go back?
Motochika: I've told you this before. The enemy has absolute control of the sea before us.
Gracia: Absolute control... so how does that works?
Motochika: We will be attacked at sea. With our current strength, there is a high chance that we will be sunk. Thus, we need more preparations.
Gracia: I'm disappointed... Father told me that Motochika was strong and reliable, but I guess that's not true...
Motochika: Excellent... I will resist your disappointment, magnificently. This rhythm of rebellion that I play will resound throughout Shikoku!
Gracia: Hmm? Umm, you mean... I got it! You'll unite Shikoku and take absolute control of the seas, right?

Battle: Iyo

Event: Unification of Shikoku

The Chōsokabe clan united Shikoku and took complete control of the Setouchi sea.

Gracia: Now I can finally go back! Father is waiting for me!
Motochika: That's the plan but... a messenger from the Oda just came. I will go meet him. You'll wait here.

Motochika invited the Oda messenger in.

Motochika: A messenger arrives right after I've conquered Shikoku. Nobunaga is keeping a close eye on the happenings in the land.
Ranmaru: Yes. Lord Nobunaga places great importance on his relations with the Chōsokabe clan. In the future, if it pleases you...
Motochika: Nobunaga magnificently has his own intentions for the land. I have no objections to us walking down this path together. ...By the way, has Mitsuhide been acting weird?
Ranmaru: About that... Lord Mitsuhide has suddenly absconded.
Motochika: What happened?
Ranmaru: His daughter disappeared when he was away from home... I heard that he treasured his daughter so much that she grew up very sheltered.
Ranmaru: Lord Mitsuhide is important to the Oda clan. I tried to stop him but... no matter what, he wanted to search for her.
Gracia: And, where did he go?
Ranmaru: No one knows... I volunteered to be the messenger to Tosa because I thought that Lord Motochika might have news of Lord Mitsuhide.
Gracia: No way...
Ranmaru: Umm... and you are?
Motochika: Mitsuhide's daughter.
Ranmaru: Huh?!
Motochika: Mitsuhide did not come to Tosa. He must be looking elsewhere for his daughter, wandering around in his endless confusion.
Gracia: Motochika, what should we do?
Motochika: Worry not. The hearts that yearn for each other cry out together even across the distance of a thousand ri, and destiny will bring them together before long...
Gracia: Hmm, I don't really understand... but that was cool! Ran, while you're staying with us, you can tell us everything you know! I'm counting on you.

Chapter 2: A trip to Kyūshū for two

Event: Eyewitness report

Gracia: Sigh... where on earth is Father hiding?
Motochika: He is sharpening his spirit. Can you feel it? The bitter cry of Mitsuhide who's searching for you!
Gracia: Huh? I can't feel it though.
Motochika: In that case, are you going to give up?
Gracia: No way! I'm not going to give up before I meet Father!
Motochika: That's good. A letter from Ranmaru has arrived. The Oda clan sends news that a person who looks like Mitsuhide is in Kyūshū.
Gracia: I see! So it's Kyūshū! Now that you've mentioned it, I can feel Father's bitter cry coming from Kyūshū! So, tell me! Where is Kyūshū?
Motochika: Kyūshū is to the west, separated from us by the sea. Shall we try invading Kyūshū from the north?

Battle: Landing at Kyūshū

Event: The beautiful crossdressing lady

Gracia: Father's not here either... Father...
Ginchiyo: Hey, come on! Don't cry!
Ginchiyo: The Tachibana will help you look for your father too. So, don't cry.
Gracia: You will help me too?
Ginchiyo: A Tachibana never goes back on their word. We swear on our pride that we will find him.
Gracia: Is that true? That's so kind of you! Motochika, is it okay if Tachibana helps us too?
Motochika: This is your journey. You should decide for yourself the companions that walk with you.
Gracia: In that case, Tachibana! I'll be counting on you from now on!
Motochika: Mitsuhide might be further ahead. Let's search the entire Kyūshū until we reach southern tip.
Gracia: Mm! But there's something I want to try first.

Gracia: Aah! So this is an onsen?! It's so warm! It's so bubbly! Motochika, why is there hot water coming up from the ground?!
Motochika: Don't be so noisy in the onsen. It's not the proper etiquette. Hold back from soaking in the onsen for a magnificently long time, it's bad for your body. And don't forget to drink enough water after you come out from the onsen.
Gracia: Mmm... there's so much do's-and-don'ts in onsens, it's too hard.
Motochika: Lastly, enjoy your time in the onsen.
Gracia: Mm, got it!

(SPLASH)
Ginchiyo: Hey! Who the hell dives into a onsen?!

Event: At Sakurajima

Motochika: Look to your right hand. That's Sakurajima.
Gracia: My right hand, huh. Hmm? My right hand is my right hand. It's not Sakurajima.
Motochika: That's not what I meant. Look towards your right hand side.
Gracia: You should have just said that from the start. Aah, is that Sakurajima?! It's so beautiful, like a mountain floating on the sea!
Motochika: That's right, it's beautiful. However, do not forget that behind that beauty lies a deep sorrow. In the past, there were frequent eruptions and it was called an unlucky place.
Gracia: Nature can be scary...

Battle: Sakurajima

Chapter 3: The wise scholar

Event: The wise scholar - Mōri-sensei

After the Kyūshū incident, there were no more news of Mitsuhide's whereabouts. Gracia passed the days without being able to make any headway. On one such day, a letter from Ranmaru came.

Gracia: A letter from Ranmaru! Has he found out where Father is?
Motochika: No. It's information about a man who might know where Mitsuhide is.
Motochika: That man's name is... Mōri Motonari.
Ginchiyo: Impossible... Motonari is alive?
Gracia: Tell me! Who is Motonari?
Motochika: The Mōri clan rules Chūgoku and he was the head of the clan two generations ago. He was thought to have died a long time ago, but...

The letter stated that if they were to head to Aki, the Oda would send reinforcements.

Ginchiyo: In the end, the Oda clan just wants to use us to attack the Mōri, isn't it?
Gracia: Even so, I want to meet Motonari!
Ginchiyo: Motonari had once caused my father suffering with his underhanded methods! Even if he's still alive, he can't be trusted.
Gracia: But, but...
Ginchiyo: H-Hey, don't cry! Sigh... I guess there's no other way. I'll accompany you there at least...
Motochika: If you have even the slightest desire to, then go. Save your despair for later.
Gracia: ...I don't want be in despair later either.

Event: Hanbei's reinforcements

Prior to the attack on the Mōri, a general from the Oda was despatched to them. He was Takenaka Hanbei, the commander general of the Shikoku invading force and Hideyoshi's strategist.

Hanbei: I got seasick on the ship and it was terrible. Just thinking about the trip back by ship again gets me down...
Motochika: The rolling of the waves will sweep away the disturbances in your heart, the melody of the wind will cleanse your hardened soul.
Hanbei: Hmm? But my soul is sparkly even without any cleansing.
Gracia: Mmm, tell me! If you can't see your soul, how do you know it's sparkly?
Hanbei: I see. So you're Mitsuhide's daughter, aren't you? And it's because I polish it every night.
Gracia: Mmm... why do you have that knowing smile when you answer? Tell me! I want to know more about you polishing your soul every night!
Ginchiyo: I didn't come here to talk rubbish! Get to the main point!
Hanbei: Whoops, sorry, sorry. The Oda reinforcements are ready, so I'm here to prepare for things.
Hanbei: The enemy, Mōri Motonari, is the famed strategist of divine plans and dastardly schemes! We shall work together and defeat this tough enemy!
Gracia: Hm, can't we just go to see him without fighting?
Hanbei: Hm hm, Motonari has died once so we can't resurrect him unless there's a danger to the Mōri clan.
Motochika: Even his shadow has faded from the world but Motonari returns upon hearing the sorrowful cries of the ones he left behind...
Gracia: Haaaaah, somehow that sounds scary.
Ginchiyo: So basically, we just need to attack the Mōri and capture Motonari.

Battle: Mōri

Event: Unable to help

Ginchiyo: Mōri Motonari, I have finally caught you! I will kill you in my father's place!
Gracia: No, Tachibana, you musn't be hasty!
Gracia: Motonari, we are looking for Akechi Mitsuhide. Do you know where he is?
Motonari: Akechi Mitsuhide? Looks like the rumours of him absconding are true. I didn't hear any news of him appearing anywhere in Chūgoku.
Gracia: Sigh... another dead end.
Ginchiyo: So in the end, the Oda spread the news they saw fit to in order to make use of us?
Hanbei: Ah, can you really say that? It is true that Ranmaru is searching desperately for Mitsuhide.
Hanbei: Well, I did suggest that we could take down the Mōri... but no one lost anything from it, did they?
Motonari: Looks like I am not part of that 'no one' who lost nothing from this. The Oda have been too aggressive lately.
Motochika: If Motonari knows nothing then we have no more need to be here. Let's leave.
Ginchiyo: What are we doing with Motonari?
Motochika: There's no point in killing someone who has already died once.
Motonari: You have my gratitude. Now I can finally retire...

Chapter 4: The Will of the World

Event: The incident at Honnōji

When Gracia visited Motochika in his rooms, Motochika and Ginchiyo were conversing with strange expressions.

Gracia: What is it? Did any news come from Ran?
Motochika: No. Ranmaru is no longer in this world. He met his end together with Nobunaga.
Gracia: Huh?
Ginchiyo: There was a rebellion at Honnōji in the capital. Oda Nobunaga is no longer in this world.
Gracia: That's...
Motochika: It seems that the army that attacked Nobunaga were carrying banners bearing the bellflower crest.
Gracia: Bellflower crest... could it be, Father?!
Ginchiyo: Don't cry! We still do not know the truth. It may not necessarily be Mitsuhide who's behind this!
Motochika: Even if you should be hounded by the world as the traitor's daughter, we will not let go of your hand... definitely.
Ginchiyo: Believe in us, got it?
Gracia: I understand.
Motochika: Anyway, it would be best for us to move our troops to the capital in order to find out the truth of the matter and to protect the falsely accused Mitsuhide and his family members.

Battle: Settsu Harima

Event: Mitsuhide appears

Motochika: I've found Mitsuhide. He has returned to his castle and is making preparations to defend his vassals and family from the armies pursuing him.
Ginchiyo: The world views Mitsuhide as a traitor and pursuing armies are being sent from all over.
Gracia: Father would never be a traitor!
Motochika: Regardless of what the truth is, there is no one who would listen to what he has to say now. A battle is unavoidable.
Gracia: I have to go! Even if the whole land turns against him, I will always be on Father's side!
Motochika: Excellent. Your soul resounds with your magnificent determination. I will play this rhythm of rebellion with you, against the whole land.
Gracia: I'm sorry.
Ginchiyo: Oh? Aren't you going to cry anymore?
Gracia: I won't cry. I have to save Father!
Ginchiyo: You've become stronger. There is nothing to fear, the Tachibana will be on your side too.
Gracia: Thank you!

Battle: Yamazaki

Event: Hostility

The Chōsokabe army forced back the enemy at Yamazaki and returned to camp immediately.

Gracia: Father! I'm glad you're okay!
Mitsuhide: Lord Motochika... I apologise for involving you in this matter.
Motochika: It's no big deal, Mitsuhide. We choose our own paths.
Gracia: Father is not wrong! The one at fault is the one who killed Nobunaga!
Mitsuhide: No... it's what I deserve for absconding.
Gracia: In that case, the one who caused Father to abscond was me...
Ginchiyo: Who cares about all your regrets? In the end, who was the one who killed Nobunaga?
Motochika: The person who kills the traitorous Mitsuhide will be seen as the rightful successor to rule the land...
Ginchiyo: So, is it someone in the Oda family...?
Motochika: No, none of them would benefit from killing Nobunaga. The family would be split and the Demon King's army would begin fighting among themselves. Outside forces would once again have the chance to take control of the land.
Gracia: To take control of the land by making Father a scapegoat... that's so cowardly!
Motochika: They may be cowardly but they're also clever. No one would think it odd if Mitsuhide, who had absconded, were to lead an army.
Motochika: They let Mitsuhide be the target of the Oda family's hatred and take control of the land while pretending to know nothing...
Ginchiyo: It is indeed an ingenious and dastardly scheme... Could it be?!
Motochika: We will know with time. Our enemy's attack will go on for a while, filled with hatred and tinged with despair. We will need to prepare.

Battle: Ōmi-Iga

Event: Chōsokabe besieged

The generals who had sworn to pursue the traitor Akechi Mitsuhide formed an alliance. In an effort to attack Chōsokabe Motochika, who was protecting Mitsuhide, they eventually besieged the Chōsokabe.
Then, the Oda-Tokugawa army, who were the driving force of the alliance, made their move. They led their troops to take down the Chōsokabe, and arrived to engage Motochika and Mitsuhide in a decisive battle.

Mitsuhide: The situation has taken a turn for the worse...
Motochika: Excellent. This era has decided to judge us. Our rebellious souls shall bare their fangs at it.
Gracia: That's right, we're rebels!
Ginchiyo: However, even the Tokugawa made their move so quickly. Their movements are too smooth...
Mitsuhide: It makes one think that they have a resourceful leader who's well aware of the state of things.
Ginchiyo: Someone capable of that must be...
Gracia: Must be?
Motonari: It's not me.
Gracia: Aahhh!
Ginchiyo: What?! Where did you appear from?
Motonari: I move about easily now that I have been retired.
Motonari: Well then, this is simply my own theory regarding who's the real culprit but I think the person in the most superior position right now is also the most suspicious one. ...In this case, the most suspicious person would be?
Mitsuhide: The person playing the role of overseer and giving orders to the Oda clan generals and the Tokugawa men is... Lord Hideyoshi.
Motonari: Yes, that's right. Well, we don't know if it's something Hideyoshi thought up on his own or if it's the work of his strategists...
Gracia: Strategist... Hanbei?
Motonari: We can't be sure of that. He does have other strategists.
Motonari: However, there is no point in finding the real culprit in your current situation. You have to survive the next battle.
Mitsuhide: That's true... The enemy is drawing near.
Motochika: If they come, we shall only resist... magnificently!

Battle: Komaki-Nagakute

Event: Departure

They somehow managed to force back the large army but the land still pursues 'the traitor and all who aids him'.

Mitsuhide: We managed to defeat them somehow. However, it is only a matter of time before new enemies appear.
Ginchiyo: We shall just smash them no matter how many times they try! We are not in the wrong! I am going to prepare for war.
Gracia: …...............
Gracia: Someone, tell me. Until when will the fighting go on?
Motonari: I have an idea.
Gracia: Whoa! It's you again!
Motochika: I'll listen to your idea.
Motonari: The real culprit's goal is to become the rightful successor to the ruler of the land by killing the traitor.
Motonari: Furthermore, if the fighting goes on, you will all eventually be killed as traitors, which would be in accordance with the real culprit's plans.
Gracia: So what should we do?
Motonari: Disappear before you're killed. It'll deal a blow to the real culprit's plans.
Gracia: Hmm....
Motonari: Moreover, the fact that you are all 'alive somewhere' is also very important.
Motonari: 'The enemy of my enemy is my friend'. History has proven this.
Motonari: As long as the 'villainous traitor' remains alive somewhere, it'll be hard for those left behind to make new enemies. In other words, the land will be at peace.
Gracia: The land will be peaceful if we become villains?
Mitsuhide: I understand... I shall disappear as a villain. Lord Motochika, for the sake of a land without fighting, will you disappear with me?
Motochika: To bear this sin for the sake of the land? Excellent.
Gracia: I'm coming along! But... we're leaving Tachibana here. Tachibana is so kind, it doesn't suit her to be a villain.
Motochika: Excellent. I shall prepare a ship. Our destination is... wherever the wind blows.

Cutscene (same link as the first cutscene, the final cutscene starts around 1:54)

Gracia: Wow, the sea is so wide!
Mitsuhide: Lord Motochika, is it okay for you to leave without saying anything?
Motochika: It's no big deal. The land is now at peace. The people have united for the sake of defeating us.
Motochika: In which case, there will be no senseless wars without us there.
Gracia: Ah, I'm falling! Ahhhhh, I'm falling!
Mitsuhide: What are you doing?
Gracia: Hm? What's that?
Ginchiyo: Hey! What do you mean by leaving me behind?!
Gracia: Whoa, Tachibana is coming after us!
Ginchiyo: Stop laughing, help me!
