There are bad episodes, and there are cop outs.
Dear SPN,
You've spent that last two seasons building up to this. I realize you don't have a lot of money for something flashy, but you've always been able to compensate with interesting storytelling. But this episode? It's like you realized it was the day before shooting and decided to crap something out in a few hours.
I LIKED the narration from Chuck. The Impala backstory was cool. Dad and I geeked out over the beauty of that car.
The beginning with Lucifer was okie-dokie. Of course he knew about the rings; he's the Devil, and he's been around the block. The conversation with Lucifer vs. Sam was intense and par for the course (in a good way). Dean shed some tears when Sam was taken over, and I felt a little choked up myself.
It's everything afterwards that blew. Cas IMPLODES. Bobby gets his NECK SNAPPED. And once it's all over and done with, Cas comes back, all angeled up, and that's... how do I say this... lame. Watching him learn about humans and think for himself was why he was such an enjoyable character! Now that God once again brought Cas back, he's all serene and disappearing from the car instead of sticking around to finish a conversation.
To have all the awesome characters at their disposal (Crowley! Cas as BAMF! Bobby with legs! Gabriel, if he hadn't kicked the bucket! Kali! DEATH!), they decide to cram Dean in Lisa's house, have Castiel revoke two seasons' worth of learning and fly away, Bobby hunt... somewhere, and either Sam or Lucifer (but probably Sam, if the show wants to wipe the slate clean) standing outside all stalker-ish.
P.S. Dean staying with Sam, even as Lucifer beats the hell out of him, is heartbreaking. I'll give the writers that much.
BUT IT DOES NOT MAKE THE REST OF IT OKAY.
