Dead Man's Blood

Okay, I am a geek. An obsessed, pathetic, over-analyzing geek. But for me, that episode had the best one-line summary/example of character development and continuity ever:

When Sam and Dean are in the car and Sam is back on the whole "How can you just be the unquestioning soldier" kick, and Dean looks at him and responds:

"Whatever it takes."

I was like, of course! That's it, right there. Whatever it takes to keep his family together and safe is what he means, and we see that play out in the episode. If obeying Dad's orders will keep him with them, then Dean will do it. And when he realizes that the only way they'll stay together and safe is if he stands up to his dad and forces him to see reason, then he does that.

And the really painful part? Sam totally didn't get what Dean meant by that line--you could tell he thought Dean meant whatever it takes to get the job done.

No one in his family gets Dean, and it just kills me.
