The first person Babe thinks of is Gene, but Gene's gotta have his hands full with Joe after something like that, unless Joe's gone off somewhere on his own. Then, there's Buck. Nah, he ain't ready for that yet, not after seeing him with that look on his face and his cracked voice when he'd screamed for a medic.
Where Babe does find himself walking is a surprise even to him. The damn piglet's following him around, her little hooves in the sand. The thing's kinda like a dog, with a snout and one that his friends would probably rather see in sausage patties on their breakfast plates. He hasn't named it since, well, it's a damn piglet. At least it's not wearing a bow anymore. How Eden's gonna react to it is the bigger issue.
Even more than that, is what the hell he's gonna say when he gets there. Hell, it's like she's seen a lot more than Babe has, but what's the use in comparing? Even if he wants to turn around, he can't when he sees smoke rolling away from Eden's lips. He wants to let her think no one's watching, 'cause there's something more open about her this way. She's uncompromising, unapologetic, and maybe that's what Babe really likes about her. Damned if he can explain it anyway, but now he almost forgets why he's been wantin' her company.
He takes a few steps forward, the piglet on his heels. "Been holdin' out on me?" he asks, nodding vaguely at the cigarette that's burning between her fingers.
