Finally something that panders to my music-loving side -- Hello, Glee!
What is Glee, you might ask? For those who don't know, it's a tv series about a teacher who takes over his school's show choir club, and the other people (students, teachers, parents, partners) who are involved in it.
Seriously, my review of this show is that if it didn't have the songs, it would be another run of the mill high school drama, which probably can't keep up with shows like 90210 or One Tree Hill coz they have better looking people in it. But if you love music, this show is worth watching for it. Unlike High School Musical, they only break into song while on stage/practice so it's not as though they break into song while walking along because the sky is blue or anything like that so it's more believable.
They do cover of popular songs and showtunes, all of them songs that you've probably heard before and can relate to. On it's own, the songs are pretty much a pop/gospel-style cover of whatever song it was originally, but the thing is that if you hear the song in context of the show, there's more feeling in it as somehow whatever song they sing relates to the plot. I am currently listening to the soundtrack (of course there's a soundtrack) which is the full version of whatever song they sang on the show. Of note are the "mash-ups" which are 2 songs arranged to become one song. Listen to the mash-up of Bon Jovi's 'It's My Life' and 'Confessions' (can't remember who sang it), there's the background strain of the familiar "It's My Life" but they layer the chorus of "Confessions" on to it, fantastic track.
Also, can't let a fangirl opportunity go by now, can I? *deep breath* KURT HUMMEL!!!! *squee!!!* He's the show's token gay character, and is absolutely fabulous! I love him so much I could squish him. Watch episode 4 where he does Beyonce's "Ring On It", absolutely classic. My younger brother, sister and her boyfriend all like him very much too.
As for the other characters, they don't make much of an impression on me, but all of them can sing. Most of the main-ish characters have done solo parts each, and they surprisingly have good voices especially Lea Michele, Amber Riley, Kevin McHale et al. I wonder why none of them are interested in American Idol, they have the voice to make it.
Bad bits of this show? Chris Colfer (that's the actor for Kurt) should get one proper solo at least as everyone else has one proper solo in their repertoire. Also, I find the main female character Rachel Berry to be the most annoying person in this entire show. Granted she can sing fantastically, but the way they wrote her... I mean, she's even bitchier than the show's token popular head cheerleader and she's supposed to be one of the losers of the school and that's saying something. My sister can't stand her either.
That said, this show won't make it in my books since I hate the main female character from the bottom of my soul and there's too much romantic drama going on except for the fact that I love the songs on the show and Kurt, lol. But to each his own.
