Which food would you never even try to taste? What food will you never eat again?
Ynez isn’t a picky eater. Far from it. In her family, if you didn’t eat what Lupe put on the table, you didn’t eat. It was that simple. Her family still had the habits of the poor. One generation removed means that nothing is forgotten and nothing gets wasted. All parts of the pig get eaten whether it’s boudin (her maternal grandfather’s recipe) or menudo (her paternal grandmother via Lupe) or hocks and snouts.
English food is a whole other story.
Ynez feels bad for laughing so loud and so hard at that menu item. She thinks she embarrassed John, although he wouldn’t ever let on. He insisted it was great food and ordered some just to make a point.
She can’t help it. How can she eat something called spotted dick?
Fundamentally, Ynez is twelve.
She passes on the warm, chewy beer, too. One in a lifetime is plenty. Never again.
