the clock strikes 12, and we step into a brand new day known in the books as Valentine's Day. this is the day where if you search "Valentine's Day" on technorati, you'll probably get millions of hits and this is will be lost in the sea of blogs commenting/lamenting/jumping for joy at the onset of Cupid's day.
see, the thing is, no matter how singles tell you that Valentine's Day is a hoax and it's commercial, EVERYONE, i repeat, EVERYONE wants to celebrate Valentine's Day.
so if you tell me that you don't care and you hate the debacle and hype over the love fare, i say to you... LIAR.
cos deep down, everyone hopes that someone will call them up and ask, "will you be my Valentine's? will you go on a romantic date with me?" everyone hopes that they will wake up to a day full of surprises. everyone hopes that when they step into school or work, they will see a present, flower, whatever waiting expectantly for them. everyone hopes that someone remembered to send a bouquet of flowers to the reception so that they can pick it up.
if you scoffed at the above scenarios, and the guy/girl of your dreams does at least one of the above for you, i scoff back at you if you are smiling. cos i bet my last dime that you will beaming from ear to ear.
come on people, it's in our nature. we love to be special.
don't give me the motherhood statement that you will not spend on the whole commercialisation of Valentine's Day because if you find that special someone to celebrate it with, you will empty your Fort Knox account for them.
like a friend said the other day, "It's a crime to be single on Valentine's Day".
think about it for a moment because it is true. you see advertisements going, "Single on Valentine's Day? Call XXXXXXXX." or "Do not be worried that you are alone on Feb 14, visit www.xxx.com and meet new friends!"
it's a crime people. the world says it's a a crime.
and you? you feel it too. let's be honest here, i feel it too. this is the day where i go, "erm... can we please don't go out? cos i don't want to see couples or be seen without A other half."
i rather busy myself the whole day, pretending that it's 13th Feb or 15th Feb, then rush to friends' houses to have a "normal" dinner and quickly sleep so that the dreaded day is over and the real 15th Feb comes.
14th Feb night just screams, "SINGLES, DO NOT COME OUT OR YOU WILL BE PROSECUTED! THREAD OUT AT YOUR OWN RISK."
it's a whole different universe literally. humans are joined by the hand and there are two heads, 4 legs to a body. bouquets of flowers sprout everywhere over night and not on bushes. everyone dresses like it's Christmas and your eyes will probably be blinded by all those public display of affection.
if you are single and you are out, you will probably die from the mushy-until-can-die Epidemic or the just-reminding-you-that-you-are-alone Plague.
STEP OUT AT YOUR OWN PERIL!
but a word of encouragement to all the singles out there - when you really do get to sleep, don't worry. cos the next time you open your eyes again, the sun is up, 15th Feb is here and everything is back to normal again.
you just got to get pass this day.
all together now single people of the world.... BREATHE and embrace this horrifying day.
