pet peeve resurfaced

this is what i don't understand (yes i'm going into one of those moods again) -

why why why do cyclists think they own the roads?

i'm not talking about your motorcyclists. i'm absolutely fine with them because secretly i aspire to be one of them. i'm talking about the ones who paddle hard and furious to travel at a total speed of 5km/h.

let me clarify further. serious road bikers, i've no problems with you. it's those who use the bicycle to travel from place to place leisurely.

i'm not one who confuses having my own transport as a given and look down on cyclists. in fact, i think having a bicycle and cycling around with it is one of the best things in the world.

i used to want to be able to cycle around to get to places. i've begged my parents to trust me, swore on my grandfather's tombstone and offered a vial of my blood in a bid to get them to either believe that i'll be safe or at least be able to clone another daughter in the event i'm not. along the years, i've given up trying because there isn't anyone in this world more stubborn than me. and i didn't have enough money to tide over a 3 mth hotel stay should my parents chase me out of the house if i come home one day with a set of BMX wheels.

but the truth is, some cyclists really believe that they own the roads.

this is what irritates me the most. they cycle off when the green light comes on. they cycle off when the green man comes on. they cycle off when they see anything green.

YOU HAVE GOT TO DECIDE, GREEN LIGHT OR GREEN MAN.

PEDESTRIAN OR MOTOR VEHICLE.

cyclists have to come to a realisation that they cannot have the best of both worlds. they cannot want to save time and pretend they are as fast as a 0 to 90km/h in 2 seconds Jaguar and they cannot choose when they want to be as fast as the old neighbour i have.

they have to choose.

choose people, choose.

cos if you don't choose, i can't decide too if you are going to respond to a green light or a green man. and i'm definitely not going to sit with my engine idling, thinking, "hmmm.. oooh! this bicycle is so fast! it's making a turn! suddenly it's on the pedestrian crossing! suddenly it's not!"

no that ain't going to happen.

if you don't choose, one day, something is going to happen.
