Over the past few weeks I did two portraits of Colin Morgan from the BBC series Merlin. I'm still pretty new to drawing, especially this style. Any constructive criticisms or helpful hints for what I could be doing better would be much appreciated! Especially with hair. And lips/mouths. Because I have no idea what I'm doing. T_T
For the first one, I just had to go and pick an odd angle. Even the reference looks odd. I actually think my drawing doesn't even look like Colin and I know what it is. It's the jaw line. Maybe if I'm feeling ambitious one of these days, I'll go back and fix it.
This second one I did on better paper (bristol). I won't be doing portraits on anything else anymore. The finish is so much smoother! And blending is easier. I learned a ton on this one. Things like:
- Do complicated layering (such as the hair) in one sitting, otherwise you're going to forget what you did in the first place and you'll have a mismatch.
- How not to draw an open mouth (b/c the one you see is my 3rd attempt and it still looks wrong)
- Don't work on the hard parts when you're really tired. You'll just end up erasing the whole thing later.
- After multiple erasings in one place, the paper stops accepting new lead evenly.
Oh! And I think I'm finally getting the hang of how to do clothing. As a result, you can probably tell which part of the scarf (neckerchief?) I drew last.
I may badmouth my drawings but I'm actually pretty pleased with my progress overall. I'm still in the drawing mood too. I just need to settle on a new subject. ^_^
