a surprise on a trip

My boyfriend and I met at MEC five years ago when we were scheduled for a shift together one evening, on cash. It was just the two of us - he was tanned, fit and just off a 6 month stint working as a stage manager on a cruise ship, and I was… kind of smitten.

For the next few months we flirted and he called me “jerkface” because he couldn’t remember my name. Then I took a ride in his cute 1962 Ford Anglia (not a euphemism) (aka the Harry Potter flying car) to McDonalds, just for the sake of hanging out while he ate Chicken McNuggets.

This was when he realized I was totally hot for him.

Then we started dating, slow and casual at first but things got intense the next summer when I was working up in Ft. McMurray as an archaeologist 3 weeks out of every 4. Time together became precious, and we quickly went from friends to besties as well as lovers.

A little over a year and a half ago we moved in together, not without some trepidation on both our parts. I was worried it would Ruin Everything, he was worried close proximity would totally turn me off. Neither happened, and as it turns out I’m a bigger slob than he is.

On January 8th we flew off to Bucerias, Mexico for a week-long holiday in the sun. On January 11th, we went to Las Caletas to go scuba diving. The conditions were reportedly terrible, and they kind of were. Low visibility, not too many fishies. I did see rays jumping out of the water, though, and seahorses, puffer fish, moray eels and a large spiny sea urchin.

But the best part? Jonny proposed.

Underwater. While scuba diving. Using cue cards he’d made using a sharpie on plastic plates.

It was totally romantic.

I said yes.
