The end of the calendar year seems to be the time for memes, and I've seen this one cropping up here and there. So, here's my
1. Attended a field school/went on holiday in Greece. Hoo boy, this was a doozie! I went to Greece with a friend and came home with someone who hated me, and as a result I lost most of my social circle. It sucked so hard, but this honestly was one of the best things that has happened to me. I've since met people with whom I have for real things in common, who aren't petty, who can argue and forgive, and who have let me grow and become, well, me. I also learnt how to cut people out of my life if they turn toxic, and how to spot the toxic people in the first place. And funnily enough, my positive memories of Greece overwhelm the memories of the times I wanted to cry, when I was cut down, mocked, snarked at, and otherwise made to feel like the scum of the earth.
2. Got a job at MEC. This sort of ties into point 1 - MEC was where I reinvented myself, found a new group of friends, and generally had a good time. This was also where I met the Boy, and 3.5 years later I sure don't regret that.
3. Became an archaeologist. I've worked the trenches, dug the mud, fought the bears, fended off rig pigs, and found the artifact. My degree might be too specialized to get me real money or a real career, but I've used it, which is more than some folks can say.
4. Nici died. One of my best internet friends, the toughest bitch this side of Pluto, a single mom, snarkily funny, fiercely loyal, and greatly missed. Breast cancer cut her off at the knees (via her spine) and she died in her early 40s, leaving behind a daughter not much younger than my brother. She loved Halloween, Tanith Lee, hard rock, and good writing. And falling to his knees and crying out hard. Oh yeah, I said it.
5. Moved out. While I love my folks and thank them for letting me live in their home while I attended university, it was time to have my own space. And what a sweet apartment it was...
