Lindsay's coffee cup stopped midway to her mouth as the entire building seemed to shake. Her first thought was an earthquake but the loud thunderous sound nullified that idea. Claire had risen to her feet and listened to the fire alarm. Both instinctively moved towards the door. Lindsay's hand snaked out and gripped Claire's. Neither spoke, it was understood, they stayed together. Ignoring the elevator, Lindsay headed for the stairwell and they quickly were at ground level. Lindsay's eyes flew to the staircase where smoke billowed downward and Claire coughed pointing outside. Lindsay looked at her desperately.

“ Lindsay, it's too dangerous! Let the professionals handle it.” Claire frowned.

“ It's the DA's office- the explosion came from up there- .” Lindsay retorted.

Grimly she led Claire to the exit then turned and ran towards the stairs before anyone could stop her. Claire wasn't surprised and anxiously looked for familiar faces. Spotting Tom, she moved through the throng of people. Tom looked pissed.

“ Where's Linds?!”

“ She's gone to find Jill.” Claire murmured.

“ For Christ's sake! Let Jill take care of herself! “ he spat angrily.

~~~
Smoke seemed to be everywhere and Lindsay covered her mouth with her jacket as she stumbled over debris. The place was utter chaos. Jacobi shouted to her to leave but she ignored him. She knew he was looking for Denise as well as Jill. He was doing the exact same thing she was. She wasn't leaving without Jill and he wasn't leaving without Denise. The fire seemed to be under control now that the fire department was on the scene. Lindsay gaped at the remains of Jill's office. The door hung listlessly from one hinge. Lindsay didn't doubt the explosion had originated in either Jill's or Denise's office and knew with every fibre of her being that Valdez had done this. Coughing she turned looking for platinum hair.
“ Come on baby, where are you?” she whispered fighting the urge to cry.
Spotting Cranson as he struggled to his feet, Lindsay yelled wanting to know where Jill was. Dazedly he looked around then pointed,
“ They were just ahead of me-”
“ Who?!”
“ Jill and her friend- your reporter friend.” he coughed leaning insteadily against a wall.
Lindsay felt her heart clench. Jill and Cindy? Anxiously she eyed the direction he had indicated and knew they had to have been closer to the blast.
“ Help me find them!” she ordered.
Five minutes later, Lindsay was pulling an unconscious redhead into her arms and breathing a little easier as she found a pulse. Cranson shouted to her as he pulled debris away from Jill. Lindsay told him to get Cindy out then turned her attention to Jill. Cradling the blonde, she coaxed her to open her eyes and hugged her close.
“ Cindy.” Jill croaked.
“ She's safe. Come on, on your feet.” Lindsay ordered.
Jill leaned heavily against Lindsay and tried to collect her wits. Lindsay cupped her face and looked intently at her eyes. She knew immediately that Jill had a concussion.
“ Bomb-” Jill murmured.
“ I know sweetie. Walk with me, come on.”
“ Cindy- hurt. I heard her-”
“ She's already outside. Jill, we need to get you away from this smoke. Can you walk? “
“ Yeah- what about Denise?”
“ I don't know.”
“ We have to find her-”
“ No damn it, we have to get you out of here to where it's safe.” Lindsay frowned fairly lifting her over the debris.
“ Linds-”
“ I got you.”
“ I think I'm going to pass out-- “ Jill mumbled fretfully as things began growing gray.
“ Don't close your eyes on me. Sweetie, please. Stay awake.” Lindsay urged then caught the blonde as she began sagging towards the floor.
Claire stared out the hospital window then glanced over at Lindsay who was sitting beside Jill's bed. Next to her, Cindy lay still sleeping. Both had faired remarkably well. Aside from a concussion, Jill had numerous cuts and bruises and a fractured rib which was more annoying than anything, Cindy had sustained a deep cut in her arm and temple. Claire closed her eyes shivering at the memory of Cranson carrying the redhead out. Blood had been everywhere.
“ You should go home, I'll stay with them.” Lindsay smiled tiredly.
“ I want to be here. Besides, I'd like to know how Denise is.” Claire frowned.
“ No word yet?”
“ No. Gates is out of surgery. The poor guy, he's going to be sporting an eyepatch for awhile.”
“ They were all incredibly lucky.” Lindsay sighed thinking of what could have happened.
“ Linds, this was Valdez wasn't it? ”
“ I'd put money on it.” Lindsay nodded tracing a finger along Jill's wrist.
“ God, first Ed and now these two- We have to make him pay.” Claire fumed.
“ He's good at covering his tracks.”
~~
Jacobi smiled tiredly at Claire as she handed him a cup of coffee. Sighing she sat down and rubbed her eyes.
“ How are the girls?” he asked tiredly.
“ They're going to be fine. A few days in the hospital and they'll be released. Denise?”
“ She'll be taking some medical leave. It'll take a little time.” he said huskily.
“ But she'll be ok?”
“ Yes, she'll need a little physiotherapy on her arm- she must have raised it to protect herself--”
“ Warren, are you ok?”
“ Why wouldn't I be?” he frowned.
“ Maybe because you care about her a lot more than you care to admit? You old fool, have you gone and fallen in love?” she teased.
“ Shut up Claire.” Jacobi chuckled wearily. It felt good to laugh a little. Denise was going to be ok.
~~~

Lindsay looked up as Chloe appeared in the doorway looking a little pale and shaky. Part of Lindsay wondered where she had been. She had left messages for her earlier. Slowly, the girl came in and made her way over to Cindy's bed.

“ How is she? “ Chloe asked.

“ She'll be fine, they're letting her out tomorrow. They're just keeping her for observation.” Lindsay replied.

Chloe moved and drew the curtain over separating the two beds. Lindsay shrugged then silently turned back to watch Jill. The blonde had only stirred when the nurses made her talk. Lindsay knew they were checking her because of the concussion. It wasn't that long since the incident with Susan. As she sat watching her, Lindsay smiled and gently touched the raised freckles then was startled to see blue eyes watching her.

“ Hey beautiful.” Lindsay whispered mindful of Chloe on the other side of the curtain.

Jill looked at her dazedly and struggled to focus. Lindsay touched her shoulder and whispered,

“ Don't move around.”

“ Linds?”

“ I'm right here.”

“ Cindy?”

“ She's fine. So is Denise.”

“ My head-”

“ Hurts huh? You have a concussion.” Lindsay explained kissing her gently.

“ You look tired.”

“ You let me worry about that.”

“ It was Valdez wasn't it?” Jill frowned rubbing her head.

“ It has to be.” Lindsay agreed.

“ God- Cindy almost got caught in all of this-”

“ Hey! I can hear you two!” Cindy called out.

“ Cin, you ok?”

“ I am now. Chloe is picking me up in the afternoon and we are going to hibernate for a few days.”

“ Ah. “ Lindsay smiled.

“ As long as you don't come home pregnant.” Jill shot back.

“ Jill!? “ Cindy laughed.

Jill chuckled then winced and held her side. Lindsay grinned and kissed her affectionately.

“ Go home and get some sleep.”

“ Jill.”

“ Go, I'll be fine.”

“ I'll walk out with you Lindsay.” Chloe said pulling back the curtain.

Lindsay leaned down and kissed Jill soundly then crossed to Cindy's bed. Pressing her head against Cindy's forehead, she whispered,

“ I'm glad you're ok I love you kiddo.”

“ I love you too Linds.” Cindy yawned.

~~~
Claire lay in bed staring into the darkness as Ed snored next to her. Valdez had taken so much from her.
Remembering the raw fear she had felt as Cranson had carried Cindy out, Claire sighed. Her family was under attack, not her blood family but her family all the same. She thought of Cindy as a baby sister and Jill, well, Jill and she had a bond that was undefineable. Even Lindsay was in a special compartment of her heart. Her girlfriends. This was war. Hurt any of them and you hurt her. Claire glanced at Ed and frowned. She couldn't watch someone else she loved be destroyed.
~~
Lindsay curled up on the sofa and absently stroked Martha's coat. She was sorely missing Jill tonight even though they didn't spend every night together. She'd already called the nurses' station to check on both Jill and Cindy.
“ Just you and me girl.” Lindsay crooned to the collie mix and smiled half heartedly.
With a groan she hugged the dog and closed her eyes. The brunette was soon sound asleep on the sofa too tired to go to bed. She didn't know a car was parked down the street with Fong watching over her or she would have blown a gasket. Tom had been wise enough not to tell her.
~~
Cindy gingerly eased herself out of bed and shakily moved over to Jill's where the blonde was restlessly twitching. Worriedly she whispered, waking the blonde from the beginnings of a nightmare. Jill looked at her in confusion.
“ You were dreaming. It didn't sound good. Move over.” Cindy ordered.
Soon Cindy was spooning the blonde and they settled back against the shared pillow. Cindy didn't say a word and Jill closed her eyes wearily.
“ Thank you.”
“ No problem. Do you think you can sleep now?”
“ Just promise to stay.” Jill said softly.
Cindy kissed the blonde's cheek and whispered,
“ I'll be right here. Just sleep.”
“ I love you Thomas.”
“ Love you too.” Cindy smiled, “ But don't tell Linds or she'll arrest me.”
