Lindsay paced back and forth rarely looking at anyone. Jill sat in bed resting her head on her knees. Beside her, Claire absently rubbed small circles on her back and continued to watch the blonde closely. She had suspected Jill wasn't being totally honest about the nightmares. She'd been aware of Jill's fatigue and pallor for weeks. She was angry with herself for not confronting the blonde sooner. Now, of course, Lindsay was furious with Jill for hiding the nightmares and not telling them immediately about the flowers and Denise's concerns. Claire knew Lindsay's anger stemmed from worry but it didn't change the fact that she had chewed Jill out. Cindy had been stunned by Lindsay's temper.

“ Maybe we should all try to sleep.” Claire suggested.

“ Fat chance of that happening.” Lindsay scowled.

“ Linds- I”

“ Don't say anything! We're your friends for god's sake and you keep the fact that Valdez has all but promised reprisal against you a secret!?”

“ I just wanted us to have a break-” Jill whispered rubbing her temples.

Lindsay looked at her as if she had lost her mind. Walking over she squatted down and lifted the blonde's chin. Jill frowned uneasily.

“ We were vulnerable. Not knowing you were in danger meant that I wasn't keeping an eye open for trouble. How do you think I would feel if Valdez had decided to make a move here?!”

“ The same way I feel when you've killed a Valdez and the other is threatening you! Lindsay, I'm a prosecutor! This is my job! Just like I have to let you do your job, you have to let me do mine!”

“ Bullshit! It's not the same thing at all!”

“ Lindsay, calm down! “ Claire ordered deciding the emotional exchange had gone on long enough. Jill swore under her breath and disappeared into the bathroom. Lindsay ran her fingers through her hair and looked at Claire in exasperation. Cindy grimaced. This was not going well at all.

“ You know I'm right!” Lindsay hissed.

“ That she should have told us? Yes, but her reasons were well intentioned.”

“ I'll make sure that's on her gravestone ' she was well intentioned' !!” Lindsay said hotly.

“ Don't take that tone of voice with me! All I'm saying is she knew we'd hear tomorrow, she just wanted us to enjoy today before this damn case dragged us in!” Claire retorted.

“ Guys, come on.” Cindy frowned.

Jacobi eyed Tom in grim silence as he hung up the phone. Tom glanced at his friend and indicated a chair. Jacobi sat down already kmowing the answer.

“ There's no law against sending flowers. And no proof Valdez sent them.”

“ This bastard is a loose cannon Tom!”

“ I'm putting an extra detail on both Jill and Denise. I already had a call from Lindsay. She's livid that Valdez is focusing on the DA office and not the police.”

“ She's a target too.”

“ She doesn't think so. I've arranged someone to shadow her as well. I expect you to be on your toes.”

“ She's my partner. You don't even have to ask.” Jacobi frowned.

Cindy sat in the passenger seat while Claire drove Lindsay's car back to San Francisco. The trip was silent for the most part each lost in their own thoughts. Claire was worried about both Lindsay and Jill. She was also worried about them as a couple. The relationship was brand new and involved two people that didn't have good track records in relationships. Lindsay's need to protect Jill was almost suffocating and for someone like Jill who was used to keeping her own council, it was bound to be difficult to accept. Claire knew Jill's instinct would be to withdraw and she prayed Lindsay wouldn't push the blonde too hard.

“ Yesterday seems like a lifetime ago.” Cindy moaned dejectedly.

Lindsay glanced at Jill several times as they drove. The blonde was driving and ignoring her and it was beginning to really bug her. Determined to not let on that she was annoyed Lindsay turned her thoughts to Valdez and decided that perhaps it was time for her and Jacobi to pay him a visit. Any guilt she may have felt was long gone in light of the threat to Jill. Broodingly, Lindsay realized it didn't matter that they weren't speaking at the moment, she was not letting anything happen to her. Lindsay bit her lip and silently mulled over the conversation with Tom. He had admitted they were taking the threat very seriously.

When they arrived, Jill glanced warily at Lindsay then headed in but found Lindsay right at her side. Somehow, it was reassuring that even if Lindsay was mad at her, she was still right there. Both climbed the stairs to Denise Kwon's office, both moved down the hall in unison then Lindsay hissed,

“ Your office, now!”

Jill glared but unlocked the office door. Lindsay grabbed her by the elbow and propelled her inside. Shutting the door soundly, Lindsay pushed the blonde up against it and kissed her demandingly, not relenting until Jill gave in and responded, hungry for the intimacy too.

“ - Linds-”

“ Shut up. “ Lindsay ordered kissing her again.

Jill was lost and helplessly let Lindsay kiss her thoroughly. Finally, Lindsay eased back breathing heavily. Jill bumped her nose gently against hers and was quickly drawn into another kiss and moaned approvingly.

“ What am I going to do with you?! You're driving me crazy” Lindsay groaned nuzzling her neck.

“ I'm sorry- “ Jill whispered.

“ No you're not.” Lindsay chuckled nibbling at her earlobe. Jill sighed,

“ I am - really I am.”

The knock startled both of them and Lindsay jumped back quickly as Jill unsteadily wiped her lipstick from Lindsay's lips then smiled ruefully.

“ Ms Bernhardt, it's Cranson, I was told you were back. I'll be right outside.” the bulky detective said in a businesslike tone.

“ Thank you.” Jill murmured.

“ We'd better go see Denise.” Lindsay frowned eyeing the flowers still on Jill's desk. Jill followed her gaze then pointed to the door. Lindsay gave her hand a squeeze and then they headed to Denise's office. Denise was relieved to see Jill and quickly filled them in on the flower delivery and Jacobi's concern. Grimly, she eyed Jill and ordered her not to go anywhere without Cranson. Lindsay informed Denise that Jill would be staying with her until the threat was eliminated.Jill looked at her in surprise but didn't argue. After, the previous night and that morning, she wasn't about to throw a hissy fit. Jill was very aware that the idea of having to stay with Lindsay was very appealing.

Once Lindsay departed to have a talk with Jacobi, Jill found herself knee deep in preparation for the Michael Valdez case. Denise was more determined than ever to nail him. It was really a textbook case which normally would go smoothly but the threats had upped the ante and both of them knew they had to make it airtight. Part of Jill wondered what would happen next if they locked up the Valdez boy. Would that be when the father made his move? Jill worried about Lindsay but Denise surprised her by letting her know Jacobi had Lindsay guarded. Relief spread through her although she knew Lindsay wouldn't like it.

Valdez hung up the phone. Boxer and Bernhardt were back. He smiled in satisfaction. All three women were in the same building and he had it on good authority that all three were in the DA's office. He had given the go ahead. He didn't care if he scared them or killed them but they would not leave there today without knowing he was controlling their fates. They could not go after his boys and get away with it. Broodingly he thought about the money lost over the past number of days. He would not take it lying down. He didn't care about taking out a cop, he'd ordered that done before and Boxer had it coming. Nobody messed with Valdez. His contact wasn't happy about it but that didn't matter. If he wanted to live this was the price. He was his whore, and would do his bidding. Soon, Mikey would be freed and they could get back to work. Valdez walked outside and lit a cigarette then watched his street with detached interest. He was a force to be reckoned with and he enjoyed the strange combination of fear and respect the neighbourhood had towards him. Valdez smiled and drew deeply on the cigarette, no cop or lawyer was taking this away from him. Grimly he watched his wife walking up the sidewalk. Vivian eyed him warily as she climbed the steps to the porch then passed him.

“ Boom ! “ he shouted then burst into raucous laughter as she hurried indoors.
