Wiping the perspiration from her neck, Jill moved into the living room and licked her lips in a nervous habit that she thought she'd outgrown. The blonde's stomach was turning over after the nightmare but she had yet to throw up. She wouldn't. She wouldn't let him have a victory like that. Cursing she flicked on the lights and looked at the time. Another night with no sleep. Mutely she stood at the window trying to spot Fong's car. She knew he had relieved Jacobi around ten.

~~

Peters saw the figure cross in front of the window and smiled. Did she know he was there? Did she sense it? Did she know it was payback time? Peters sat lost in thought. He was a patient man but this was so delicious, he was growing anxious to get on with it. Still, he was long on patience. With that thought, he pulled away from the curb. Lost in his plans, he missed the car that followed his back to the rundown apartment he now resided in. Peters entered his dwelling and pulled a beer out of the fridge and guzzled it greedily then belched and wiped his mouth. He didn't even realize she had followed him.

~~

Linday broodingly sat in Claire's office and waited for her friend to arrive. Claire greeted her with a grin that faded quickly. Sitting down she opened the lid of her coffee and took a sip. Lindsay sighed and rubbed her eyes.

“ You can't keep this up.”

“ I know it but god- if he hurts her...” Lindsay whispered.

Claire closed her eyes and nodded. Lindsay swallowed and looked at Claire.

“ Talk to her for me? Convince her to stay with me. She'll be safer in my house.”

“ Jill needs her independence. Especially now. Honey, she doesn't want you feeling responsible for her.”

“ Well I am!! It's my job to keep her safe- my job to protect her.” Lindsay whispered feeling a tightness in her throat.

“ He's got an apartment not ten minutes from her building Claire.”

Claire sat up nearly spilling her coffee. Lindsay didn't even know she was crying until Claire moved around the desk and pulled her into her arms.

“ I can't lose her Claire- he's waiting..”

“ I'll make her move in even if I have to drag her there.” Claire promised feeling the same sick feeling she had experienced during the darkest days of the Kiss Me Not Killer case.

“ Claire, I've never been this scared in my life- or hated anyone. I'll kill Peters! I'll kill him to keep him away from her.” Lindsay vowed.

“ Don't. We'll get him. He isn't smarter than all of us.”

“ Isn't he? Jill thinks he is.”

“ Jill has been his victim and whether she realizes it or not, she still thinks like a victim.”

“ Make her move in with me.” Lindsay urged.

~~

Cindy flipped through her notepad and smiled absently. Jill's case was going smoothly and her friend was humming on all cylinders. Cindy actually got a kick out of watching Jill work especially when Jill could smell a guilty verdict. Today, she was getting a guilty sentence and the blonde knew it. Cindy grinned. She could tell Jill knew it by the way she sauntered towards the jury. Work them Jill, work them.

She was about to duck out when Jill lost her grip on her papers and they spilled to the floor. Frowning, Cindy wondered what had distracted the blonde and followed Jill's gaze. A wave of panic washed over Cindy and she quickly slipped out of the court room. Once in the hall she pulled out her phone and hit the speed dial. As soon as Lindsay answered Cindy hissed,

“ Peters is here right at the courthouse. He's in the fucking courtroom Linds!”

Lindsay had still been in Claire's office when Cindy called and she insisted on going with Lindsay. By the time they arrived, Denise had gotten an adjournment and she and Cindy were sitting with Jill in one of the chambers. Lindsay crouched down and gently eyed the blonde.

“ He's gone. He must have realized I saw him.” Cindy muttered.

“ He wanted to be seen.” Lindsay scowled.

“ Lindsay, there's no law against it. You know that.” Denise said pragmatically.

“ Yes Denise I know that!” Lindsay glared.

“ Come on, let's give them a second.” Claire suggested moving Cindy and Denise out of the room.

Lindsay gently rubbed Jill's arm and waited. Jill looked beyond her at a wall adorned with a picture of Obama and the American flag.

“ Democracy sucks sometimes. The bad guys have all these rights... and their victims have to play by the rules.”

“ You're staying with me.”

“ Linds-”

“Jill, he has a place near yours and-”

“ I know. You aren't the only one who has sources. God Linds-” Jill sighed wearily.

“ Jill, he won't get to you.” Lindsay promised.

“ I'll kill him Linds” Jill whispered tears running down her face, “ He was here the other day too- I thought I was imagining it but he was here.”

“ Why didn't you tell me?!”

“ What good would that do? Look at you. You're a wreck.” Jill grimaced smoothing Lindsay's hair back absently.

“ I'm a cop! Damn it Jill, I'll do anything to keep you safe.”

“ That's what I'm afraid of. Linds, promise me you won't go there- not like last time.”

“ I'm keeping you safe.”

“ Promise! “ Jill frowned anxiously but Lindsay wouldn't. Groaning, Jill wiped her face and got to her feet.

“ I need some things from my place.”

“ We'll stop there first.” Lindsay smiled relieved to have won this round. Jill glanced at her wordlessly and brushed back her bang. Lindsay pulled out a kleenex and silently dabbed the blonde's face then smiled gently,

“ It'll be ok.”

“ I'm so tired I don't even care right now.” Jill sighed as they left the room.

Claire eyed Lindsay questioningly and let out a relieved sigh as Lindsay nodded. Grimly she pulled Jill into her arms and hugged her tightly,

“ You do what Lindsay says.”

“ Yes mom.” Jill replied sarcastically. Claire hugged her tighter then let her go but kept an arm around her waist. Unconsciously Jill leaned into her friend taking her strength. Claire listened as Lindsay explained they were getting some of Jill's clothes. Nodding she looked at Jill and made eye contact. Jill nodded, a silent message to her old friend that she was ok. Reluctantly Claire headed out with Cindy.

Cindy wore a troubled expression as they walked to her car. Claire looked at the traffic,

“ You're worried.”

“ Aren't you?” Cindy asked.

“ No, I'm terrified. Peters is living barely 10 minutes from Jill's home. The thing is, he can bide his time.”

“ Well, at least they're under the same roof.” Cindy smiled faintly.

“ Lord, only you could see romance with a sick bastard roaming around loose.”

“ I'm just saying, those two can't avoid each other now.” Cindy shrugged.

“ You forget we're talking about Lindsay. “

“ But Jill- come on, she's always had a healthy - appetite. I can't believe I said that.” Cindy winced.

“ Just for future reference, Jill is not the sex fiend people think she is. She's selective.”

“ Jill? Hello, Hanson on a desk?”

“ Hello, the guy would do anything for her. They would have been good together if Jill wasn't crazy in love with Lindsay.”

“ Which brings me back to my original point. Lindsay and Jill are going to be under the same roof.”

Cindy grinned.

Jill hung up her clothes in the guest room and silently glanced towards the door. She could hear Lindsay on the phone and surmised that it was Jacobi. She suspected her bodyguards were discussing strategy. Smiling without humour she changed into a tank top and her favourite pj bottoms then went out to the living room. Lindsay glanced at her and smiled then went back to the conversation while Jill sat down. Martha meandered over and rested her chin on Jill's thigh. The blonde raised an eyebrow but stroked the dog's head and was rewarded with a lick to the back of her hand. Wrinkling her nose she looked for a cloth to wipe off the saliva.

“ Hungry? “ Lindsay asked leaning in the doorway of the kitchen. Jill shook her head but pointed to the kettle.

“ I'm making tea.”

“ Not coffee?”

“ I don't want to be awake all night.” Jill frowned.

“ That was Jacobi. Denise filled him in.”

“ I still have trouble with seeing those two together.”

“ Well, I've never seen him so relaxed.”

“ Sex will do that Linds.” Jill grinned moving passed her to the living room.

Lindsay smirked and followed her. Sitting down, she decidied to change the subject.

“ How are you doing? Really.”

“ I'm still here.” Jill winked.

Lindsay drew in a deep breath and silently vowed to keep it that way. Absently she scratched Martha's ears then raised an eyebrow as her dog moved over to Jill and made mewing sounds trying to get the blonde's attention. Jill eyed the dog then reluctantly stroked her neck. Lindsay rolled her eyes as her dog put her paw on Jill's lap.

“ I don't get it, she knows you don't like dogs yet she adores you.”

“ She likes all your friends.” Jill mused.

“ Not like she likes you. Cindy lived here and she was lucky if Martha deigned to stay in the same room.” Lindsay chuckled.

“ Ah well, I get that reaction from the male species.” Jill joked.

“ Martha is female.”

“ I get that reaction from them too.” Jill quipped and they both laughed.

Several hours later, Lindsay quietly looked in the bedroom where Jill was sleeping. Martha had curled up at the foot of the bed and raised her head alertly. Lindsay grinned and whispered,

“ That's it, you stay with our girl.”
