Late evening Hawaii Five-0 ruminations

Since I don't feel like doing another episode reaction post just yet, have a list of stuff I have seen--and am mostly amused by--in H50 fandom.

  1. At least two folks have asked about gossip rags in Hawaii. Uh, dudes, just this year Honolulu went from a two newspaper town to one, when the owner of the Star Bulletin bought the Honolulu Advertiser and merged them into the Star Advertiser. The other "newspapers" I can think of are free and not as big as the Star Advertiser. I can't speak for the neighbor islands, but I strongly suspect Honolulu at least isn't big enough to have a major newspaper *and* a gossip rag on the level of the National Enquirer.

  2. Based on some of the fic I've been reading, people seem to assume Danny hates pineapple. I'm not sure if it's due to him calling Hawaii a pineapple-infested hellhole, or because he doesn't like fruit on pizza. Thing is, I love pineapple just fine when it's not on pizza--actually, I generally prefer fresh fruit that's not in a cooked dish--so I was rather amused when in episode 6, the first thing Danny does when he gets the Blue Hawaii drink (I think--still didn't re-watch the episode yet) is eat the slice of pineapple that came with it. XD

  3. There also seem to be people who think Danny doesn't know how to swim, despite the fact he said he could in the pilot. Whatever. My personal theory is that he not only knows how to swim, he taught Grace within those first six months of living in Hawaii. In a pool, of course--possibly at one of the YMCAs.

  4. There are people who didn't know Kono was a guy in the original series. XD

  5. Something that made me go "huh?": I think it was episode 5 that had the kidnapped daughters of the US ambassador to the Philippines? Well, whichever episode it was, at one point Kono had to go undercover to infiltrate a prostitution/slavery thing, and before Steve and Chin went in after her with a team of police officers who looked vaguely like SWAT, Steve mentioned Kono to them so they wouldn't apprehend her with the others. Steve described her as, among other things I didn't quite catch, a "local girl." When I was surfing through journals after the episode, I saw a few who took offense at Steve's description and considered it racial profiling. Bwuh? Racial profiling? Seriously? Who thinks being called a local is a bad thing? I certainly don't.

  6. As is normal in any fandom, some of the fic I've read have been pretty good, and some aren't. Admittedly, I'm getting thrown out of fic more often than I would in a different fandom, but it can't be helped. Although I must admit I never thought the day would come when I'd see people using fan-Hawaiian. >.>;;;

  7. Alex O'Loughlin's website is unexpectedly handy with some information. For instance, the "Molokai rainforest" setting in one episode was actually filmed at Manoa Falls. And Danny's studio apartment is actually in a privately-owned dorm complex. XD

    That wasn't very long, was it? Oh well, there's only been six episodes so far anyway.
